Today, Buckeye Community School recognizes both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. 🍂

Columbus Day is a federal holiday observed on the second Monday in October, while Indigenous Peoples’ Day is recognized by many communities as an opportunity to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

As we acknowledge both observances, we also recognize that this day can hold different meanings for different people. We hope it can serve as an opportunity to reflect on history, learn from one another, and show respect for the many cultures and experiences that continue to shape our communities today. 💙

Please remember that all Buckeye Community School locations are closed today, Monday, October 12, in recognition of the holidays. We look forward to welcoming students back into our Learning Centers tomorrow, October 13, 2026! 🍁📚

🌟 FEATURE FRIDAY 🌟

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Anna Maybee from Buckeye Community School Tiffin! 💙

Anna is a hardworking student who can consistently be counted on to turn in high-quality work while balancing school, a job, and caring for her young daughter. She regularly visits the Tiffin Learning Center to turn in her work and connect with staff, and she is working toward an exciting goal: graduating early! 🎓👏

For Anna, one of her biggest motivations is her daughter. She hopes to be an inspiration to her and show her that even on the hard days, she can keep moving forward and finish high school. Ultimately, Anna says her goal for the future is simple but meaningful: to give her daughter the best life possible. 💙

Anna says Buckeye Community School’s flexible schedule has helped her complete her schoolwork efficiently and learn in a way that works for her. Having the opportunity to connect one-on-one with teachers and staff has also made a big difference in her experience. Anna is especially thankful for her teacher, Trinity Lescallett, who has been by her side since she started at BCS and has played an important role in helping her get to where she is today.

Just as Anna has found encouragement at BCS, she makes an effort to give that encouragement back. She enjoys helping others, explaining things when someone needs a hand, and supporting students who may be facing circumstances similar to ones she has experienced. She even recommends BCS to other students who may be struggling in a traditional school setting. 🌟

Outside of school and work, Anna enjoys drawing and painting, listening to music, and spending time doing fun activities with her daughter. 🎨🎶

We’re proud to celebrate Anna’s work ethic, determination, kindness, and commitment to building a bright future for herself and her daughter. We’re so proud to have Anna as part of the Buckeye Community School family, and we’re excited to cheer her on as she continues working toward her goals! 🌟

🏫 Meet Aaron Carter, Director of Properties at Buckeye Community School! 💙

Now entering his third year in education, Aaron brings nearly 14 years of real estate experience to his role—and a passion for using that experience to help create spaces where students and staff can thrive.

For Aaron, one of the most rewarding parts of his work is seeing the positive difference being made each day and knowing that what he does helps support opportunities for students to learn, grow, and succeed. 🌱

Outside of work, you might find Aaron on the golf course ⛳, checking out a new pizza spot somewhere in Ohio 🍕, or spending time with his family.

We’re excited to have Aaron as part of the Buckeye Community School team and appreciate everything he does behind the scenes to support our students, staff, and locations! 👏💙

It was a great opportunity to connect, build relationships, and share more about the work being done to create alternative educational pathways for Ohio students. 💙

Wes England, Communications & Development Director, and Shawn Bailey, Director of Marketing & Communication for New Leaf Organization, recently attended a Meet & Greet at Butcher Block in London, OH with Ohio State Senator Michele Reynolds.

As members of the New Leaf Organization team that supports Buckeye Community School, Wes and Shawn had the opportunity to share more about BCS, our student-centered approach to education, and the importance of providing alternative pathways for students who may benefit from a different approach to earning their high school diploma.

Connections like these give us an opportunity to share the Buckeye Community School story, highlight the work happening across our locations, and contribute to broader conversations about educational opportunities and school choice for students throughout Ohio. 🌱

We appreciate opportunities to connect with community and state leaders while continuing to advocate for educational options that meet students where they are and help them move toward a successful future.

🎓✨ Our Buckeye Community School Marion seniors spent Friday, October 2 exploring possibilities for their futures at the Marion Area College Fair!

Held at the shared campus of The Ohio State University at Marion and Marion Technical College, the event brought together representatives and recruiters from more than 50 colleges and universities across the region. Students had the opportunity to learn more about programs and career pathways, ask questions, make connections, and start thinking about what their next chapter could look like. 💙

We love seeing our students take advantage of opportunities like this to explore their goals, discover new possibilities, and continue planning for life beyond graduation.

We’re so proud of our Marion seniors for taking an important step toward their futures and exploring all the possibilities ahead! 🎉🎓
