Today we lost someone who many of you may not have known. His name was Ralph Rodriguez.

You may not have known Ralph, but without him, the iconic purple mats that you currently adore/train on would never have graced Stoic.

When we started Stoic, Ralph said - "I have a bunch of mats from a community outreach program we no longer are doing. The only bad thing is they are in about 6 inches of water and inside of a shipping container."

We SHOVED them into a Uhaul that barely closed, spent the next 12 hours SCRUBBING/bringing those mats back to life.

As Ralph gave his last breath, it is important to use that the entire community knows that he breathed life into Stoic and without him, we very likely wouldn't exist.

So when you roll on our mats, the iconic purple, know you roll with a piece of Ralph, forever a Soul Fighter.

Starting Sunday, September 13, our Sunday open mat runs at 1PM every week, and the doors are open to the public. Free. No fee, no membership, no invitation needed.

What to know:
• Sundays, 1PM, starting Sept 13

Congratulations, Michael Hoskinson, on your Black Belt promotion.

Many people will never get to experience the journey to a black belt, much less the journey that comes AFTER you obtain the rank. This thing that you worked so hard to achieve is often described by those with it, as the beginning of the journey rather than the end of one.

The journey has much to do with who you have become as a result of it, and where you were when you first started. You live a decade or more between each point, and the life you started with is no longer the one you have. People end up in entirely new careers, get married, experience loss, have children, and move homes.

Michael said that he hoped to do us proud and to be worthy of his black belt.

I explained to him that we were already very proud of him and that if he wasn't worthy of it, he wouldn't be wearing it now.

I told them I would edit them all out of the background. I lied.

Huge congrats to Mr. Joel on his blue belt. This man has been plagued with injuries and still manages to battle his way to the mats. Don't mess with him, as a white belt he broke a nose, no telling what he breaks next!

Master's Worlds is upon us. The mats are packed as usual, and in a room full of people absolutely drenched in sweat, the silence is loud.

No talking, no complaints. Just everyone moving towards one goal - making those around them better.

This is what being part of a team is and what being a teammate looks like. 1 percent better. Every. Single. Day.

Couldn't be more proud of this young man here. It was his birthday and in a way, his blue belt birthday 🎂 💙

He turned 16 and he turned blue. His family has been a cornerstone of this academy since we opened our doors. It is no surprise that he has made it to blue belt, joining the ranks of his father.

The years go by fast little Omar, enjoy the journey. Couldn't be more proud of you.
