A strong school year doesn’t mean getting everything right. It means having the right support—and a safe place to ask questions, build confidence, and keep moving forward.
As a mom and teacher, that is what I wanted Simple Steps Teaching to provide for local families. Today, our team includes 35 experienced educators supporting students from elementary through high school.
Whether your child needs help with reading, math, executive functioning, physics, biology, Spanish, SAT prep, or another academic area, we will help connect them with an educator who fits their individual needs.

But here’s our plan:
Let’s not wait until the first missing assignment, confusing math unit, giant test, or Sunday-night meltdown to figure out support.

Sometimes a student doesn’t need more work.
They need the right explanation.
The right strategy.
The right encouragement.
And someone they feel comfortable saying:
“Wait… I still don’t get it.”
That’s why matching students with the right teacher matters so much to us at Simple Steps.

The goal isn’t to make school more intense.
It’s to make school feel more manageable.

Helpful Tip #4 TUTORING ISN’T ONLY FOR STRUGGLING STUDENTS
This might be one of the biggest misconceptions about tutoring.
You can be a strong student and have a tutor.
You can get good grades and want extra support.
You can understand the material and want to feel more confident before a test.
You can even work with a tutor because you want to challenge yourself or make a hard class a little less stressful.
And here’s something students don’t always realize:
A lot more kids have tutors than you probably think.
Getting support isn’t a sign that you can’t do it.
Sometimes it’s exactly how students learn to do it better. 💙

Helpful Tip #3: Don’t wait for the grade to tell you something isn’t working.
A student can be doing “fine” on paper and still be spending hours on homework, feeling overwhelmed, losing confidence, or quietly falling behind.
Check in before the first progress report.
Ask things like:
“What class feels easiest right now?”
“What feels harder than it should?”
“Is there anything you’re pretending to understand?”
“What would make school feel easier this year?”
Sometimes the first sign that a student needs support isn’t a bad grade.
It’s stress. Avoidance. Frustration. Or simply saying, “I wish someone could explain this differently.”

Helpful Tip #2: Make it safe to say, “I don’t get it.”
One of the best things we can give students at the beginning of the year is permission to ask questions — without embarrassment, pressure, or fear of being wrong.
Kids don’t always raise their hand when they’re confused. Sometimes they nod along, copy the notes, and hope it makes sense later.
At home, with a teacher, or with a tutor, create a place where they can say:
“Can you explain that again?”
“I’m lost.”
“I don’t even know what part I don’t understand.”
That comfort with asking for help can be one of the most important skills they build all year. Sign up with the link in our bio!!

Summer isn’t over yet ☀️… but back-to-school is getting closer!
All week, we’ll be sharing one simple tip each day to help students and families ease back into the school-year flow feeling a little more organized, confident, and prepared.
Tip #1: Start before school starts.
Reset the bedtime. Find the backpack. Check the schedule. Set up a homework space.
Nothing complicated — just a few small steps now that can make those first weeks feel a whole lot easier.
And if tutoring or academic support is part of the plan this year, now is a great time to get that in place too. Fall tutoring spots are open, and teacher schedules are already beginning to fill.
