ASCE Student Chapter at MSU Mankato—supporting future civil engineers through networking, professional development, community service, competitions, and industry engagement. ASCE Minnesota State University is a Student Chapter of the American Society of Engineers located at Minnesota State University, Mankato. We operate to provide civil engineering students experiences that will give them a better understanding of the civil engineering profession and to show them the benefit of belonging to ASCE after they graduate and progress in their careers. We also strive to better project our organization, the organization as a whole, as well as the profession to our community through outreach activities.

Minnesota State Mankato faculty and staff gathered this morning for Convocation, the official start to the school year. After welcoming fanfare from the Maverick Machine marching band, President Edward Inch’s encouraging and invigorating greeting emphasized the core purpose of all who work at the University: Serving students.

“Transformational education is not just something we talk about. It is something that we do day in and day out,” Inch said. “It is more than what happens in the classroom. It's about what happens when education intersects with purpose and passion, and when students are empowered to lead with all of those.”

Welcome back from spring break! As we gear up to dive back into our academic and professional pursuits, we are excited to host our monthly chapter meeting featuring Jim Rowings of Kiewit Corporation. Join us on Wednesday, March 13th at 5:00 pm in TE 224 to learn from one of the leading experts in construction engineering and management.

Dr. Rowings currently oversees the education and training programs for 5 colleges, 8 core schools, 17 technical schools, and several specialty and craft schools. He has worked on projects ranging in scope from $60 million to $2.3 billion and is a recipient of the OPAL (Outstanding Projects and Leadership) award for construction in 2023.
At this meeting, he will discuss how students can let curiosity shape their careers and what it means to be an engineer. This is a unique opportunity to gain a greater understanding of our field, network with an industry leader, and ask questions. We can’t wait to see you there and learn a bit more about Civil Engineering!

Our first ASCE chapter meeting of 2024! Thursday, February 1st @ 5pm in TE 224, we will be hosting Greg Mitchell of Iowa Interstate Railroad. A Mankato alum and previous ASCE president, Mr. Mitchell will be joining us to discuss his role as Assistant Chief Engineer. He will touch on the basics of the rail industry, key concepts in design, and some of his favorite projects from his 13 years of experience. This is a great chance to gain a greater understanding of our field, network with him and ask questions. We are excited to see everyone at the meeting and learn a bit more about Civil Engineering!
