Sometimes your biggest college connection starts with something as simple as a math class.
When Nick Brown, '20 transferred from UMD to Minnesota State Mankato to finish his Exercise Science degree, he never expected to meet the person who would become his best friend, his wife and the mother of his daughter, Shelby Brown, '21.
He and Shelby started as classmates, then friends, then best friends. Somewhere along the way, they both realized there was something more, they just needed a little courage to say it out loud. After graduation, he asked Shelby to marry him and the rest became their story.
Now, they’re happily married with a beautiful 2-year-old daughter and are building a future together, including a small hobby farm and plans for their dream home.
His advice to fellow Mavericks? You never know who you might meet in college. Sometimes your best friend can become your partner for life, you just have to have the courage to take the chance.

Fay and Jerry Kerber ‘92, met in 1991 after realizing they were in the same film class. Just two years later, they were married, and today their Maverick story continues through the next generation. Their daughters, Kaylene and Danae, are both attending Minnesota State University, Mankato. Kaylene in the Psychology graduate program and Danae majoring in Dental Hygiene.

From sharing a classroom to building a family rooted in the Maverick community, their story is a reminder that some of life's greatest connections begin right here on campus! If you have a story, let us know here! https://link.mnsu.edu/alumnistory
