BMW N5x engine simulation! This time with Vanos activated. Vanos = “BMW variable valve timing” These clips show the difference in valve timing changes at the max mechanical limit of the Vanos camshaft phasers. The clip on the right is showing the intake cam timing advanced and the exhaust cam timing re****ed. As you can see this reduces piston to valve clearance and increases valve overlap. This cam timing change is crucial to high rpm performance. Increased Valve overlap helps promote cylinder scavenging and remove exhaust gases from the cylinder, allowing for better intake of fresh air-fuel mixture. However, running the cams in this state hurts low end performance hence why BMW Vanos cam timing makes changes during the rpm range.
