Manistee Elementary Student Council, a great thing! Student Council Members are 4th and 5th grade students at Manistee Elementary and there are new members every school year. In order to become a member, students apply, share a short presentation with their peers, and then their peers vote for the student they think will represent them best. This is the first year that 4th graders have been part of the Student Council. It was nice to have a larger group representing the ideas and voices of our 1st through 5th grade students.
Manistee Elementary Student Council coordinates various fundraising events throughout the school year and all profit is given to a local charity or family in need. There are at least two major fundraising efforts each school year and many different organizations are considered before choosing which will be the recipient of the funds/items collected. Members of the Student Council brainstorm people and places that they could give to and then choose one of his or her preferences. The majority of votes will be the one(s) to receive the funds.
In recent years, United Way and the Homeless Shelter Organization as well as one of our school families facing serious medical needs, were recipients of the funds. Last fall, Manistee Elementary Student Council organized a drive where they collected food, clothing, toys, games and monetary donations. They were able to help give what was collected to multiple families in need to help them through the holidays.
Manistee Elementary Student Council recently held a Coin Wars Competition. There was a list of a dozen places considered before students voted. All of the money raised during Coin Wars was split between two charities, Homeward Bound and Repo's Rescues.
