ART 101 with Prof. Lee

The final project of the semester. A collaborative project combining paintings of individual dreams to create the story of our class. Mining the unconscious à la Surrealism to create the Myth of our collective unconscious.

For this assignment we first discussed the difference between Representational and Abstract art. We recognized that art is not either one or the other but can range in the degree of abstraction. We used a scale of 0-5 where zero would be pure realism involving no abstraction and five being pure abstraction. We looked at paintings that varied in their degree of abstraction. For example, Picasso's painting of "The Weeping Woman" would be somewhere around 2-3 on the scale of abstraction.

We also discussed different types of abstraction such as Geometric and Organic abstraction, involving aspects of Realism, Figuration, Mechanical principles as aesthetic elements that depending on individual works of art, can be independent or combined for different forms of expression. Examples we looked at were works by Charles Sheeler, Georgia O'Keefe, Marcel Duchamp, Wasily Kandinsky, Yves Tanguy, Al Held, Keith Haring and Northwest Native Americans.

The objective of this assignment is to draw a purely abstract drawing (Level 5) showing both Organic and Geometric Abstraction and how they also blend together. So imagine that there are three parts to your composition. For example in one area of the composition, draw only ORGANIC ABSTRACTION. In another area draw purely GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION. Then somewhere where the two areas come together, draw both Geometric and Organic abstraction COMBINED. Since this a PURELY abstract drawing, we do not want to see any images or forms that are recognizable. Think of this as an elaborate doodle. Also, since this a STRICTLY LINEAR drawing (no shading!), we want to use a VARIETY OF LINES and LINE WEIGHT. This way you can show aspects of spatial depth. You can use a VARIETY OF SHAPES and SIZES as well. In this case we are also working towards VISUAL COMPLEXITY which is often achieved by overlapping and transparent shapes.
