Protective factors are influences that help children develop resilience. Resilience is the ability to overcome traumatic experiences and events. A combination of factors and experiences help set the stage for children to develop resilience. They include:
Facilitating supportive adult-child relationships
Building a sense of self-efficacy and perceived control
Providing opportunities to strengthen adaptive skills and self-regulatory capacity
Mobilizing sources of faith, hope and cultural traditions

Military families with children who have disabilities are often faced with unique challenges. Even though Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) are used nation-wide, policies regarding who receives services and what and how each service is provided varies between states and school districts.
