I used to be shocked when my clients told me they had been offered the opportunity to do a Zoom or in-person audition, but had opted to make a self-tape instead. Why would anyone pass up the chance to get help and feedback from casting directors who know exactly what creative is looking for?

It soon became clear — many actors are nervous about live auditions. They’re uncertain how to navigate a session with a casting director and worried about being able to take adjustments on the fly.

Actors, if you are taping an audition and things start to feel like they’re going sideways, or the scene isn’t coming out the way you planned- DON’T BAIL!

99.999/100 times this will be you BEST TAKE. Why? Because we are forced to listen, think quickly, and FOCUS to cross the finish line. It’s scary to feel like we aren’t in control, but relinquishing control is what allows us to PLAY!

Time and again I have seen actors bail out on an incredible take, which is why I now enforce my No Bail Rule. I am not about to let that magical take slip between your fingers!

As grateful as we all are to be asked to self tape for a project, it can be quite anxiety-inducing. Gone are the days of worrying only about our work and traipsing into casting offices to play and collaborate with casting directors.

Now we have to find a reader to tape with us, set up lighting, a backdrop, tripod, lav mic, make enough space on our phones to record video and often guess as to the tone of the project, etc. We often don’t have the benefit of recieving adjustments from casting or the creative team.

Of course it’s easy to get overwhelmed when you have so many things to consider at once!
Where do you start? How do you prioritize your time?

You need a step-by-step prep process that will keep you focused and leave you feeling confident that you’ve prepared your tape to the best of your ability. Here’s mine.
