Early in the growing season, w**ds compete with crops for sunlight, water, and nutrients. Because young crops are especially vulnerable during this time, effective w**d management is critical to helping plants get off to a strong start and reach their full yield potential.

Happy Fun Fact Friday!
Did you know approximately 5.5 million acres of Kansas farmland are irrigated?
Most of that irrigation takes place in western Kansas, where farmers rely on water from the Ogallala Aquifer to help grow crops in a region with limited rainfall. Efficient irrigation practices play a major role in conserving water while supporting crop production across the state.

Meet Lilly Merrill, a sophomore from Charlotte, Michigan, majoring in Agronomy with a plant science and biotechnology option.
Lilly is involved in Wheat State Agronomy Club and participates in the KSU Marching Band. She also works as an Undergraduate Research Assistant with the USDA Hard Red Winter Wheat Breeding Unit, gaining experience in wheat breeding and agronomic research.
