A successful intubation should not be the end of the conversation.

A newly published quality improvement article describes how Duke Health worked to standardize documentation for emergency endotracheal intubations performed outside the operating room.

These time-sensitive procedures occur across different clinical settings and involve clinicians from multiple specialties. When information is captured inconsistently across different workflows, it becomes difficult to evaluate techniques, identify complications, recognize patterns, and understand where practice can improve.

The multidisciplinary initiative brought together stakeholders from anesthesiology, intensive care, emergency medicine, otolaryngology, respiratory therapy, and other specialties to establish shared, discrete data elements within the electronic health record.

The lesson extends beyond documentation. If we do not consistently capture what happened during an airway procedure, we lose an opportunity to learn from it.

→Documentation creates data.
→Data reveals patterns.
→Patterns inform training.
💡Training improves performance.

Airway excellence is not built through individual skill alone. It requires systems that allow teams to examine performance, share knowledge, and continuously improve.

As I take a moment to reflect on the past two weeks, I am incredibly grateful.

To our faculty, participants, industry partners, collaborators, and everyone who stepped into Airway Works NYC with curiosity and a willingness to explore what airway education can be, thank you.

Thank you for believing in our mission.

Thank you for asking questions, sharing ideas, practicing, and helping us imagine what is possible.

OxyGEN 2.0 may have been an Open House, but the conversations, connections, and possibilities that emerged extend far beyond these two weeks.

We are excited by the opportunities ahead and the potential for future collaborations, new educational experiences, and continued deliberate practice.

And if you weren't able to make it, don't worry. This is just the beginning. PAC is continuing to build opportunities for clinicians to explore, practice, and learn alongside educators, innovators, and one another.

Because performance under pressure is built before the emergency begins.

Better equipment matters.

And innovation is only as powerful as our ability to confidently use it.

💡 A recent UT San Antonio article highlighted new suction technology designed with the realities of prehospital and combat care in mind.

The need is significant. According to the article, more than half of all opportunities to secure the airway of wounded service members are missed during prehospital care.

The researchers also identified an important next challenge:

“Simply providing better equipment is only half the battle, as field providers also need to be trained to have confidence in the new equipment.”

Innovation creates new possibilities.

Education, hands-on practice, and confidence help translate those possibilities into better patient care.

Clinicians need opportunities to explore new equipment.

Practice with it.

Understand how it performs.

And build confidence before the moment it is needed.

Because advancing patient care requires both better tools and prepared clinicians.
