Short-term memory is the path to long-term information storage. The human brain is capable of handling an average of seven pieces of information before the short-term memory slots are full; and unless an effort is made to retain that information, it will be gone in 20 seconds. Help learners retain that information by grouping related information, using auditory stimuli, highlighting key concepts at the beginning and end of the course, and using real world challenges and scenarios. Now that’s something to remember!

Squirrel! Do your learners have trouble focusing? Keep their attention by keeping things moving, meaningful and surprising. Use pictures and animation - people are naturally inclined to pay attention to images because it’s quicker to understand than a large block of text. Surprise them! When eLearning content is surprising or unexpected, ignoring it is impossible. Even just an unexpected quick fact or statistic will get their attention. A group of squirrels is called a "scurry" or "dray." Got your attention!

Stop objections in their tracks! Know what your learners want, and more importantly, what they don’t want. The devil is in the details, so anticipate where your learners may have objections to the learning content itself, and create a solution that addresses those objections right up front. Win them over with a great eLearning course that engages, informs and inspires them.

Think you know how to inspire your learners? Think again! Learn about your learners in order to discover what inspires and motivates them. Create meaningful content that is engaging, interesting and relevant to their personal or professional lives. Give them goals that matter. Give the learners what you want, but how they want it.

It’s amazing what you can learn in just one minute. Ways to sleep better. How to stop a sneeze. How to get wrinkles out of your clothes with an ice cube. So don’t bore your learners with a long-winded eLearning course. Everyone has five minutes - but often times not much more - so make sure every word guides the learner toward the ultimate educational goal. Less is more when it comes to keeping your learners’ attention and preventing procrastination. Good things come in small LMS packages.

Are you banishing your employees to their computers? Digital learning can be a lonely prospect for adult learners. Set your employees free by opening your courses with a warm welcome and provocative content. A friendly face, an onscreen host, immediate interactivity, or simply using the 1st person (YOU) in your scripting can help you create a digital learning course that won’t leave your learners out in the cold.
