Saint Mary's High School, Manhasset - Class of 2020

To Our Dear St. Mary’s High School Community Members,

This Saturday, March 6, 2021, the Funeral Mass for Mr. Kevin Dillon will occur at 10:15 AM in the Church of Saint Mary, Manhasset. We cordially invite you to join us in prayer as we lay our brother in Christ, colleague, teacher, and dear friend to rest. We know that our community's support will provide the Dillon Family with the strength they need to grieve and carry forward the ideals, faith, and principles that embodied Mr. Dillon's magnificent career in educating the students of St. Mary's High School.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, seating in the Church will be limited, and all safety protocols, including the use of facemasks, will be in effect. We will be providing a link for the Funeral Mass so that all who wish to participate in the Mass virtually can do so as well.

The link for the Funeral Mass will be posted here and sent via email to our current families and alumni.

At this time, on behalf of the Administration, I thank you in advance for your continued prayers and support of our St. Mary's family, especially our students who have experienced another tremendous loss this past year.

Prayers for William

William Reccoppa '20, recently learned that his leukemia has returned. William and his family both have a very positive and prayerful outlook. In fact, William shared that he believes, "God has a plan for him and that his faith has kept him grounded." The doctors are again optimistic about William being able to get through this battle.

The Reccoppa Family has asked that our entire community pray for him. William also told his dad that as excited as he was to start college, "nothing would beat St. Mary’s."

Our continued prayers and support have served to motivate William each day and are needed once again. Let us join in prayer and continue to lean on our faith as we remember William is a special way, that God continues to be on his side.

Saint Mary's High School Mourns the Loss of Zachary Zabatta '20

It is with great sadness that we announce that Zachary Zabatta, a member of the Saint Mary’s High School Class of 2020, has suddenly passed away. While on vacation in Iceland, the family was in a car accident, and Zach sustained severe injuries resulting in the loss of his life.

We have lost an incredible member of our Saint Mary’s High School community. During his time at St. Mary’s, Zach was consistently at the top of his class, choosing to take the most challenging AP courses and finding great success in them. These accomplishments were leading Zach to apply to the most competitive colleges and universities in the world. Most recently, Zach was pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout. He decided to renovate space behind the stage in Marist Hall for his Eagle Scout Project. Zachary intended to give back to a community that he felt had given so much to him.

We are all in shock at this moment. This tragedy is a devastating loss, especially for our young people. Our counselors, along with additional counselors and members of the clergy, will be on campus starting tomorrow morning to assist with the emotional and spiritual needs of our students.

Zach’s father, James, mother, Barbara, and sisters, Gabriella ’17 and Sophia are still overseas recovering from injuries. It may be quite sometime before the family can return to the United States.

In a phone conversation with Mr. Zabatta earlier today, Principal Buckley promised we would travel this difficult road with his family every step of the way. Mr. Zabatta asked that we share with you his concerns for our students in this grieving process and wants us all to make sure that we are addressing our emotional and spiritual needs, as Zach would wish to us all to do.

We will face this as a family for our friend, our student, our brother, Zach. Please pray for Zachary, his family, and the entire St. Mary’s community.

Senior moms, please note that this year you may bring your daughter with you to attend this special night so you can enjoy a lovely mother/daughter evening.
