*New Date: Sunday, September 27 at 6pm* in Derryfield's Nancy S. Boettiger Theatre.

Join us for a special screening of the National Geographic documentary film, Endurance, hosted by the film's director, Natalie Hewit. The film brings to life the incredible true adventure story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew as they survived a shipwreck in the most forbidding Antarctic conditions, intertwining this tale with the modern-day, high-tech quest to locate the Endurance in her resting place at the bottom of the ocean. Natalie Hewit took part in and documented the Endurance22 expedition and can answer all of our questions about film-making and exploration.

Derryfield families packed the Dennis Holland Competition Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center, for the School’s annual Back to School Night, an evening that gives parents and guardians the chance to walk in their children’s shoes, following their schedules from class to class and meeting the teachers and advisors who work with them each day.

Three members of the senior class, Jackson Rogers, William Zhang and Eddie Zhan, were named Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They will now advance to the competition for a National Merit Scholarship. These academically talented students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $24 million. In February 2027, Semifinalists who meet academic and other requirements will be notified if they have advanced to Finalist standing, and will receive Certificates of Merit attesting to their recognition in the program. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen from this group of Finalists, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments.

Additionally, senior Kelsey Beekman received a letter of commendation. More than one million students take the PSAT/NMSQT every year, and approximately 34,000 are named Commended Students, “in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.”

In Chemistry class this week students used dimensional analysis and scientific notation to crack a secret Rice Krispy Treat recipe. Next, they fired up the hot plates to bring their calculations to life. This real-world problem shows students how chemistry and math skills can be used outside the classroom. To end the class, everyone got to taste-test their creations!
