We had a moment to check in with Lilah Santiago-Stone , who is currently on her second internship with Hyatt. Hard work and determination truly pay off, especially when you're part of MCC NSMH. Consider joining this coming semester if you want incredible opportunities like this!
Lilah writes "My time as a Chef and B Corporate intern at Andaz San Diego has been a wild ride. It’s been full of times where I asked myself why I came in the first place and others that have motivated me to be more passionate about who I want to be and how to secure my future.
My first 5 weeks were spent in FOH. There I learned what it truly means to be a manager. You are there to help and support your staff. You’re behind the scenes and act as a ninja who suddenly bussed a table, emptied the bus bin, and ran food when your servers couldn’t. Or you’re being proactive and you’re already on your way over to an upset table ready to address the situation. David Hanson was a great role model and showed me what kind of manager I want to be.
As for my last few weeks, I’ve spent it BOH. Chef Jeremy has been a wonderful mentor who’s opened my eyes in the culinary world. He’s helped me gain confidence, taught me about so many new techniques and flavor profiles. I’ve learned what it looks like to be an Executive Chef and boy does it take a lot. I’ve so far only spent three weeks with him but I’ve learned so much. I know that in my final two weeks I’ll learn even more.
Overall, this internship has been beneficial to me not only career wise but also to my personal development. I’m very grateful for this opportunity and the new connections it had allowed me. I can’t wait to continue to grow with Hyatt!"
Lilah we are so proud of you, keep up the great work!
