The Hidden Gem Award celebrates the quiet, behind-the-scenes work of our school counselors, social workers, and SAP counselors. Through prevention, intervention, and everyday acts of care, these helpers make a powerful difference for students, often without recognition.

Each month, weโ€™ll shine a light on one of these unsung heroes that strengthen our schools and supports our community in ways that truly matter.

This month we are proud to recognize Eli Glass, school counselor at West High School. Eli passionately serves his students and community. Nowhere is this more evident than in his work with the school food pantry. On Friday afternoons, Eli brings warmth and humanity to the space by playing guitar or ukulele for students and families, helping to lighten the mood as they access basic needs like food, clothing, and personal care items. His compassion, creativity, and commitment remind us that support is not just about resources, but about dignity, connection, and care. We are grateful for you, Eli.

West Community,

Per the Superintendent's Office Semester 2 will now begin on Monday, February 2nd (changed from Friday, January 30th). This is to allow alignment with the middle schools.

We will begin Semester 2 on a BLUE Day. All students need to know what their A(BLUE) class is SEMESTER 2 as Monday will be a Regular Bell Schedule. They will receive a copy of their Semester 2 schedule in Advisory on Monday which is after their A(BLUE) class. This will be explained in detail during Advisory the next three days.

Students should be completing any missing work that they owe so that it is ready to turn in when we resume on Wednesday. We would like to see our students finish strong as we close out Semester 1. Stay tuned for any more updates.

Wednesday, January 28th will be a WHITE Day.

We hope our families are staying safe, warm, but also enjoying the snow!

The first thing Jhystoni Rivera noticed when he opened the door to his freshman dorm room at the University of New Hampshire was how small it was. Then came another realization. The closet was huge โ€” and it was his.

Rivera, 18, didnโ€™t have much privacy or independence growing up in Manchester. Now, he would.

Rivera helped his mom raise his three younger brothers, Jericho, 12, Jerome, 10 and Jermanuel, 8. When she was working, he stayed with them after school. Dad wasnโ€™t in the picture, so he was a father-figure of sorts: teaching them responsibility, coaching their football teams.

Rivera did all of this while also working as a licensed nursing assistant, leading his school wrestling team, and studying at Manchester's West High School.

โ€œI just really needed to experience independence for a first, you know, because my whole life I've just been with all my brothers and my family all around me,โ€ Rivera said. โ€œAnd I just want to experience life by myself for a little bit.โ€

Rivera is the first in his family to head to college. The TRIO Scholars program at UNH, which helps first-generation and lower-income high school students prepare for college, worked with him during his years at West โ€” where he graduated 13th in his class โ€” and will continue meeting with him throughout college.
