Last week our 15 first-year advisories and 32 senior mentors went out to perform various service tasks around the community as a part of an annual service day tradition.
The goal was simple: give back to places that do a lot for our community.
At the Hildene Farm, home to our Farm and Food Program, students planted potatoes, w**ded garden beds, and picked beans. As a reward for all of their hard work, they got the opportunity to hang out with some of the farm animals.
At Riley Rink, students helped organize boxes full of donations ranging from linens to electronics and much more for a Barn Sale to raise money for United Counseling Service.
At the Burr and Burton Mountain Campus, students stacked lots of wood for the winter and tidied up the main classroom spaces to allow classes to run more smoothly.
At the Rec Park, students helped maintenance staff by removing w**ds and raking the baseball and softball fields, and cleaning the dug outs. Additionally, they cleaned out all of the dugouts to get the fields ready for play.
At the Second Chance Animal Shelter, students helped w**d the gardens, sweep the parking lot,and cleaned the memorial bricks for pets. After all their hard work, they got to spend time with some of the cats and dogs.
At GNAT-TV, students filled out a survey to help them better understand how to target youth audiences. After that, they helped out by cleaning windows and kitchen space. At the end, they had the opportunity to make a short cooking film.
At Merck Forest, students picked apples in prep for an annual apple c***r festival and learned about the various animals that are raised and kept on the farm.
