The dancer in the center of the stage in this video is MHS graduate Mekyra Frison performing in the movie “Best of the Best”, currently the second most-popular movie on Netflix.

Mekyra -- who was actually a co-graduate (in 2024) of both MHS and the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day Program -- is now a junior (but scheduled to graduate in May 2027) at Manhattanville University, majoring in Commercial Dance.

She is represented by the talent agent bloc-NYC, which helped her land a role in the movie, a coming-of-age comedy about friendship and self-acceptance that follows two best friends who join UCLA's competitive Bollywood-fusion dance team with a dream of winning a national championship.

Mekyra is a stunt/dance double for Anjali (one of the leads) and also is a member of the rival USC dance team.

The accompanying photo shows Mekyra (seated) alongside Priyanka Kedia, who plays Anjali.

“Best of the Best” was filmed in Jersey City and Montclair, New Jersey, in summer 2025. It was released on Netflix Sept. 18.

Mekyra is the daughter of Milka Frison, the Administrative Assistant & K-8 Registrar for the Manchester Public Schools Office of Family Partnership & Student Engagement.

Said MHS Principal Dr. Amaka Fennimore: “Mekyra is a humble and remarkable human being who is also an amazing talent! I'm thrilled, but not surprised by her success and all that she's accomplishing."

During the summer, Latasha Easterling-Turnquest -- the school district’s Chief of Family Partnership & Student Engagement -- reached out to leaders of the CT Knights Football and Cheer team of Manchester, to propose a school attendance incentive initiative. The CT Knights were enthusiastically on board, and invited Latasha to come to a practice in August to address everyone. Her challenge - don't be chronically absent (which means missing 10 percent of school days or more). Well, it seems her message resonated, as after 21 days of school, 98 percent of the Knights players and cheerleaders were not CA. That’s an amazing stat, considering that district-wide about 13 percent of students are chronically absent so far. (By the way, 13 percent is actually pretty good; last year MPS finished at just over 20 percent). “I’m extremely proud of the cheerleaders and players and grateful to the CT Knights for their partnership," said Latasha.

Education can be demanding work. When the challenges become difficult, Reggie Tucker encourages educators to return to the reason they started.

That “why” may be a student, a personal experience, a desire to create change, or the belief that every young person deserves support.

Purpose does not remove the difficulty. It helps people continue moving through it.
