Ok, time for the dreaded "Potty Training" talk! Please keep in mind that when at school this involves way more than having control over their bladder and bowel functions. They should also be able to pull down and pull up their underwear and outer clothing by themselves. Parents, be sure to send them to school in "kid friendly" clothing, as well! (Yes, they are ADORABLE in those overalls, but can they get in and out/on and off the toilet/bathroom independently?) This includes belts, drawstring pants, tights or even jeans! Your child should also be able to operate a pump soap dispenser and understand how to turn on/off the water. Of course, your child's teachers are there to help, but in a class of 15 students in the bathroom, the more independent your child can be, the better! DON'T PANIC- children are very fast learners, but PRACTICE all of this over the next few weeks!

Game Time! Believe it or not, these games are also good for fine motor building, AND you can get the whole family involved! (Be sure your child is using their "crabby pincher" fingers to manipulate the cards and game pieces!)

Ripping and crumbling paper is an excellent way to strengthen those hand and finger muscles, and is particulariy good if you and your child aren't sure yet which hand is going to be the dominant hand!

Again, whether new or old to our school it is time to get those fine motor muscles into shape! One fun but excellent activity is peeling stickers! If your child finds it too difficult to peel them off the paper themselves, you can peel them and stick them on their body, their clothes or some other smooth surface for them to peel. (Pro tip for peeling off the paper- go through and raise the edge of each sticker just a smidge to help them get started and not become too frustrated!) Extra bonus: have them practice placing the stickers inside of a shape or in a straight line!

Whether this is your child's first experience with school or they are a returning student, these are good tips to remember and put into practice now. Summertime is quickly coming to a close an there is less than a month until school starts!

When you make a mistake in parenting:
• Confess to God: Bring your failure to God in prayer, accept His complete forgiveness through Christ, and release the burden of trying to be perfect.
• Apologize to Your Child: Go to your child, admit your specific fault without making excuses, and ask for their forgiveness. (You never need to apologize for being a PARENT!)
• Model Repentance: Use your mistake as a powerful, living lesson to show your child what humble, secure repentance looks like in action.
Trust that God's grace covers all mistakes- you have not irreparably ruined your child through one mistake! Trust God's grace to redeem your failure- “I am weak, but He is STRONG!”
