Ever look at social media and feel like everyone else is living a flawless, sun-drenched summer?
Our middle schoolers feel that times ten.
As we head into summer break, screen time tends to go up—and so does exposure to "The Highlight Reel."
Here is what our tweens and teens are actually seeing, and how it impacts them:
The Highlight Reel vs. Real Life: Social media is a curated collection of everyone’s absolute best moments, heavily edited and stripped of context. Middle schoolers often mistake this polished snapshot for everyday reality, leading to feelings of FOMO or loneliness.
The "Filter" Effect: From subtle skin-smoothing to dramatic facial reshaping, filters have altered what "normal" looks like. Research shows that constant exposure to these idealized images can seriously distort body image and chip away at self-esteem during crucial developmental years.
Summer is the perfect time to help our kids hit the "pause" button on comparison.
💡 Parent Pro-Tips for Summer:
-Talk about the "Behind the Scenes": Remind your child that behind every perfect summer photo is likely 50 discarded shots, a lot of lighting adjustments, and a filter.
-Unfollow for a Mindset Reset: Encourage them to unfollow or mute accounts that make them feel "less than," and instead follow creators who celebrate hobbies, humor, or real life.
-Model the Realness: Share your own unedited, goofy, or messy summer moments! Let’s show them that real life doesn't need a filter to be fun.
Let’s work together to keep this summer safe, healthy, and wonderfully real! ✨
