From Ed Sterling:

On this day, December 7, 1941, Little Joe (Joe Jedrysik CHS 1936) was eating breakfast getting ready for his job as the Chaplain’s assistant to make ready the base chapel for Sunday service. But that was interrupted by the sounds of planes, machine gun fire and bombs going off. Joe ran out of the dinning hall and stepped into hell on earth!

He looked towards the children’s chapel. All of a sudden the children’s chapel exploded with his friend Big Joe inside preparing for the children’s service. Had the attack been an hour later one hundred children would have in that building!

As a member of the chaplain’s staff, Little Joe was not supposed to be a combatant. He had no training other than what he received years earlier in basic training but Joe could not see his friends and fellow soldiers mowed down. He ran to the center of Hickem Field and helped man one of three machine guns at the base of flag pole.

By the end of the attack none of the men manning the machine guns had survived! The family of Joe Jedrysik did not get notification of his death till Christmas Eve by Western Union telegram! God Bess the Hero of Pearl Harbor and our great graduates of Cental High School.

Kellan Barbee graduated from Central just a few short years ago but he’s already making his mark. Congratulations!

Please join us in congratulating Politics major Kellan Barbee ‘26 on receiving the inaugural Catherine McLaughlin Award for Civic Leadership!

The award honors a student of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics who has demonstrated dedication to civic leadership, public service, and the betterment of others, in the spirit of Catherine McLaughlin, ‘83.

“Civic leadership and community service are values I do my best to embody every day,” said Kellan. “This award is a great reminder of the small, yet important, impact we call all have on our communities when we work together and listen to each other.”
