Hosted by the Connecticut Police Officer Standards & Training Council (POSTC)

The Officer Survival Series 3-Day Ground Fighting Course is being hosted by the Connecticut Police Officer Standards & Training Council (POSTC) at the Connecticut Police Academy.

As part of POSTC’s commitment to providing advanced officer training, POSTC is subsidizing approximately two-thirds of the course cost, making this training available to Connecticut law enforcement officers at a significantly reduced tuition.

Violent encounters rarely go according to plan.

Your dominant arm may be injured. Your support hand may become unavailable. Your firearm may malfunction, become inaccessible, or the situation may rapidly transition from deadly force to a hands-on fight.

At Officer Survival Series, we use the AU FIRE Accuracy Under Fire® Training System to create realistic physiological stress while officers solve rapidly evolving use-of-force problems.

Some scenarios require deadly force. Others never involve firing a shot.

Officers may have to transition to empty-hand control, weapon retention, ground fighting, chokes (where authorized by law and agency policy), handcuffing, or other tactics—all while dealing with a simulated limb injury or loss of function.

The objective isn’t marksmanship.

The objective is adaptability.

Can you recognize the problem, adjust your tactics, survive the encounter, accomplish the mission, and then immediately transition to self-aid under stress?

Because real-world encounters don’t unfold in neat, predictable steps.

The Officer Survival Series: Living on the Edge | June 15-16, 2026

Hosted by and

Twenty-two officers representing eleven law enforcement agencies came together at the Hartford Police Academy for two days of training focused on one of the most dangerous situations officers may encounter—edged weapon assaults.

The officers attending ranged from just under two years on the job to 22 years of law enforcement experience, creating an outstanding learning environment where newer officers and seasoned veterans trained side by side.

The course emphasized practical, evidence-based concepts for close-quarters encounters, including weapon-bearing limb control, positional dominance, movement, decision-making under stress, de-escalation when possible, BWC footage reviews and integrating less-lethal, TECC, and lethal force options when necessary.

The feedback from this class was outstanding:

• Overall course rating: Excellent
• 100% said the course exceeded expectations
• 100% rated the training highly relevant to real-world police work
• 100% reported a significant increase in confidence
• 100% said they would recommend the course to other officers

Thank you to the Hartford Police Academy and Manchester Police Department for hosting another outstanding program and to every officer who trained with professionalism, humility, and a willingness to improve.

We would also like to acknowledge and for their continued contributions to the study of edged weapon encounters. While every training program has its own approach, we highly recommend their courses to officers looking to continue their education in this important area.

We are looking at bringing both programs back to Connecticut in early 2027!
