Spent the last two days at Randolph Elementary School in Arlington, VA with this amazing coaching and admin team. We reflected, planned, and set goals to move forward alongside teacher teams. Taking a look at the first few weeks of school, and making adjustments as needed helps to set up everyone for success. It was a magical couple of days. Carlos Ramirez Christine Chapuis

Are you using Open Middle problems in your classroom? If not, why not? The amount of math that students can do with one simple problem is amazing. And they are so much more engaging than a boring old worksheet. There are so many available for you at open middle.com, that you'll never have to create any on your own. I used one with my undergraduates last night. We had a great discussion about the meaning of the = and fluency with addition facts. Thanks to Robert Kaplinsky for such an amazing resource!

Small-group instruction and learning stations at Innovation ES in Arlington yesterday. These teachers kept their focus lesson short and sweet in order to differentiate in their small groups. And, what about the other students? They kept thinking about math and collaborating as they planned math games together. Engagement high! Discourse high! Independence high! If you've worried about what your kids will do if you work with a small-group.... it's all about the right games. If they are fun, the kids will want to do them.

I was so honored to give the Keynote for last night's GRCTM conference in Richmond.
The focus was on building a Mathematics community. Here's the thing: Buildinf community in the Mathematics classrooms doesn't stop after the first couple of weeks of school. It's ongoing. It's daily. It's in the small teacher moves that matter. It's starting every day with a positive first impression. It's ensuring students have opportunities to do more and talk more. It's in the subtle messages we send about mistakes, risk taking and perseverance. Building community is something we work on from day 1 to day 180.

Spent the last two evenings facilitating virtual professional learning with the Rural Math Collaborative Intervention Pilot in California. These amazing teachers will be using Heinemann's Do The Math intervention materials, and I'm supporting them with establishing a blend of whole group and small group instruction so those intervention materials can be easily integrated into the school day. After all, we can buy programs to support students - BUT they only can help if we have systems in place to use them alongside solid Tier 1 instruction. Thanks, Lauren Pasquini for setting this all up. Heinemann

My work with Arlington Public Schools always brings me joy. The leadership is thoughtful, and the educators are dedicated. Today I had the pleasure of working with elementary coaches, and it was wonderful to hear them discussing the great things happening in their schools.
