On this first day of summer, an amazing butterfly emerged from the chrysalis C discovered last week. My bug friend helped identify it as a red spotted purple/white admiral butterfly. We offered it water and oranges, observed it in the butterfly habitat over a few hours, named it Flappy, then released it. Together, we watched Flappy fly up and over our house. Here’s to a new and beautiful season of life. 🦋💛

We have been presented with amazing opportunities to observe two different species undergo stages of metamorphosis! 😍

Here’s how we got lucky:

A couple weeks ago, my sister discovered a grey tree frog had laid eggs in her pool. She gently scooped them out and shared some tadpoles with us to raise! 🐸

Then a couple days ago, C shouted, “Ms. Kerry! We found a chrysalis!” Sure enough, C discovered a chrysalis hanging from our mud kitchen. I successfully transferred it into our butterfly habitat. We are excited to see which species emerges from it! 🦋

In addition to observing the physical changes these animals go through, we’re reading books about the life cycles of frogs and butterflies, and we have some cool life cycle animal figures to play with, too. 🥰
