We made the news this week, though unfortunate for having to have to take down a legacy tree. Bacterial Leaf Scorch (BLS) is a bacterial disease that mainly affects oaks. In our area mainly red oaks are becoming infected. Unfortunately there is no cure for this disease at this time, but an infected tree’s life can be extended through proper management practices. If you think a tree might be infected it is important to diagnose it quickly. The only way to confirm it is Bacterial Leaf Scorch is through testing from a plant diagnostic lab like the one Rutgers University. Once diagnosed a management plan can be developed which can extend the life of the tree for many years to come.
