Today in MUSD, we honor Native Americans with Indigenous Peoples' Day, a holiday that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. President Biden has proclaimed today, Monday, Oct. 11, as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. He is the first U.S. president to formally recognize this day.

Over the past years, many states such as Alaska and New Mexico, and many communities have previously adopted this holiday, some forgoing Columbus Day celebrations. (Many around the country, however, still celebrate Columbus Day or Italian Heritage Day as a point of pride in Italian culture.)

Today is a great day to reflect and celebrate Indigenous People and the many contributions they have made to the land and water, as well as the people and culture of North America. The influence of Native-American culture can be seen everywhere. In many parts of the country, rivers, towns and other landmarks have been named by native tribes. Indigenous people were here and supported Europeans during the early days of the country's development, serving as leaders, teachers, guides and doctors. Indigenous people have left and continue to leave an indelible mark on our cultures and traditions. We are grateful for the many contributions by our native people and the positive impact they have made on the United States.
