Born this day in 1819, pianist, composer, and teacher Clara (Wieck) Schumann was one of the most celebrated musicians of the Romantic era. She began performing publicly as a child and went on to enjoy a remarkable 61-year concert career. She was also a prolific composer whose works include the Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 7, Three Romances for Violin and Piano, Op. 22, Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 17, and numerous songs and solo piano works.

Beyond the concert stage, Clara was an influential teacher and editor who helped shape the legacy of Robert Schumann and championed the music of Johannes Brahms. Her artistry and independence continue to make her one of the most important musical figures of the 19th century.

WORLD PREMIERE: this weekend, Lowell Liebermann's Sonata for Solo Flute will be premiered at The Library of Congress by Lorna McGhee, principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Written to celebrate Sir James Galway, this spectacular piece will be available soon from Presser.

Born this day in 1867, composer Amy Beach was the first American woman to have a large-scale symphony published, as well as other major pieces. A skilled pianist and singer, her celebrated works include the Gaelic Symphony, Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor, Piano Quintet in F-sharp minor, and the beloved vocal song The Year's at the Spring.

Join us at the end of the month for Rhythms of Resilience, a FREE concert celebrating the contributions of African American composers.

In recognition of America’s 250th and the annual African Landing Commemoration at Fort Monroe, Principal Guest Conductor and Norfolk native Thomas Wilkins returns to lead the VSO and special guests in a jubilant celebration of the contributions of African American composers. Music for the concert stage by icons like William Grant Still, William Dawson, and Florence Price will be performed alongside music for sacred spaces by legends like Moses Hogan and Richard Smallwood. Celebrated soprano Symone Harcum and the Norfolk State University Chorus will join the festivities to lend their radiant voices to unforgettable melodies that celebrate our nation’s rich musical heritage.

Presented by the American Music Collective (AMC250) and the National Endowment for the Arts.

THIS IS A FREE GENERAL ADMISSION CONCERT OPEN TO ALL, AND REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.
