A new tradition this year during the Passing of the Light Ceremony was the presentation of the Sister Susan Joseph Scholarship Award. Two, one-year scholarships were awarded to a rising fifth and seventh grade student who exemplify the ideals of reverence, service, and leadership that are central to being a Villa Girl. Students were given a writing prompt and submitted an essay anonymously; and the winners were selected by a panel of Villa Maria teachers, administrators, and IHM Sisters. Another annual tradition during Passing of the Light is the presentation of the Emily Koenig Award. Emily Koenig was a seventh grader at Villa when she passed away suddenly of bacterial meningitis. The selected student embodies Emily’s spirit of kindness and inclusion and is nominated by her seventh grade peers. Congratulations to Savannah M. who was honored with this award. These ladies had themselves a beach day in KA! The girls participated in ELA and math challenges as well as partner/group activities that were all beach and summer themed as they prepared to graduate kindergarten and begin summer vacation! They even had some special snacks and fun wearable favors from their day!

Before their closing ceremony last week, PreK students invited their fifth grade reading buddies over to show off their writing journals and all they learned this year. After reviewing their journals, the students had fun playing games together.
