Congratulations to the class of 2026! Also, a big thanks to everyone who plans and carries out graduation, the Pre-K through 12 faculty and staff who helped the grads get here, and to the Malone CSD IT staff and Blake Rivers for their efforts in making the livestream possible. We strive to bring the best video and audio quality to you that we can, but please remember that this is a live event and that sometimes technology has a will of its own.

After closely monitoring the weather forecast, we have made the decision to move Franklin Academy's Graduation Ceremony to Saturday, June 27, at 10:00 AM.

Current forecasts indicate a significant likelihood of rain and thunderstorms during our originally scheduled time. While changing the time of graduation is not a decision we make lightly, our priority is providing the safest and most enjoyable experience possible for our graduates, families, and guests. We also wanted to make this decision as early as possible on Saturday to minimize disruptions to graduation parties and other celebrations that families may have planned.

Graduation Rehearsal will remain as scheduled on Friday at 9:00 AM. Student do not need to wear their cap and gown to rehearsal. Please make sure they are on time, and rehearsal is mandatory.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. We look forward to celebrating the Class of 2026 with you on Saturday morning.

Students & Teachers of Team Innovate at Malone Middle School "Going Green"

At Malone Middle School, Team Innovate has built an interdisciplinary gardening and growing initiative known as "Going Green," supported through a partnership with The Heart Network's Creating Healthy Schools and Communities (CHSC) program. With funding from the New York State Department of Health, the program has equipped classrooms with hydroponic, aeroponic, aquaponic, and terraponic grow systems, along with raised garden beds, grow lights, fruit trees, and an expanding inventory of seeds and starts.

The initiative weaves food production and environmental sustainability into core subjects so the hands-on work feels like a natural extension of regular classwork. Teachers report meaningful gains in student participation, motivation, behavior, and relationships, with even simple tasks like hauling water or cleaning fish tanks fostering responsibility and deeper academic engagement. The program has also forged community partnerships with organizations such as SUNY Potsdam, the Chateaugay Fish Hatchery, and Franklin County Soil and Water, introducing students to career pathways in agriculture, environmental science, and engineering.

Franklin Academy Launches Sources of Strength

This Spring, faculty and students from Franklin Academy took the first steps in implementing Sources of Strength, a peer-led, evidence-based su***de prevention and wellness program that empowers diverse student groups to spread messages of hope, help, and strength across their social networks. The team of faculty advisors and 25 Student Peer Leaders received the initial Sources of Strength training from Chelsea Keller, Director of Training and Curriculum for the Network Health and Prevention Program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Franklin Academy is one of five high schools in New York State that received three years of funding for the program through the Su***de Prevention Center of New York State and the New York State Office of Mental Health.

Su***de awareness and prevention are not new ideas; school and district leaders have embraced the need for and value of these kinds of programs for many years. According to the CDC National Center for Health Statistics, su***de was the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10-14 and 3rd leading for ages 15-24 in the United States in 2022, and also reports that su***de rates for this age group, 10-24 increased by more than 50% from 2007 to 2021. This data indicates a clear need for su***de prevention programs that include early identification, mental health education, crisis response protocols, and pathways to care.

The faculty members involved in Sources of Strength are particularly hopeful about this program’s potential to make a real impact. Christine Venery, School Social Worker at Franklin Academy and one of the faculty advisors, believes that Sources of Strength’s emphasis on Student Peer Leaders to help guide and implement the program set it apart from earlier efforts. Additionally, the program’s core message goes beyond focusing on risk factors to helping all students identify their own strengths to build up resources that can be used during difficult times, making for a more comprehensive approach than some of the other prevention programs used in the past.

Superintendent of Schools Brandon J. Pelkey, who in addition to being a student himself at Franklin Academy was a Biology teacher and Building Principal there, said of the program, “As educators, our responsibility extends beyond academics to ensuring every student feels connected, supported, and valued. The implementation of Sources of Strength at Franklin Academy is an important step in strengthening student wellness, resilience, and peer support. By empowering students to support one another and connect peers with trusted adults, we are helping build a culture of hope, belonging, and care throughout our school community.”

The district administration and advisors plan to continue recruiting and training Student Peer Leaders in order to expand the program in the years to come.
