As part of our commitment to supporting open scholarly inquiry, Pepperdine Libraries awards open access publishing stipends to faculty. The program has been tremendously successful, and during the last academic year, the Libraries awarded more than twenty thousand dollars to faculty members. The stipends are used to pay publishers for their article processing charges to prepare articles for open access publication. By publishing in an open access platform, our faculty's important work becomes available to the scholarly community in a timely manner. The publications appear in discipline-specific, rigorous, well-respected, peer-reviewed journals. We're pleased to recognize faculty who have applied for and received stipends during the 2025-2026 academic year.

Over the summer, the Genesis Lab added an exciting new offering. Our new Makerspace Cart allows Pepperdine Libraries to bring some of the Genesis Lab's cutting-edge tools and resources directly to you. Extending the Genesis Lab's capabilities beyond our physical doors supports the Libraries' efforts to impact student learning. The Makerspace Cart includes a small 3D printer—an A1 mini, with multi-color printing capabilities—and a Cricut Joy 2, which can be used to create custom vinyl decals, heat transfer projects, and more. We also have a compact heat press for students to make custom hats or shirts.

Join us for our series of intimate solo concerts performed by professional musicians from across the Los Angeles area. On Wednesday, September 23, 6 – 7 PM, Colburn School piano faculty member Hui Wu will perform two pieces by Philip Glass, "Mad Rush" and "Etudes, Book I," in the Payson Library Rushford Center. The works explore the expressive breadth of the solo piano, contrasting hypnotic, undulating harmonic shifts with intricate studies in rhythm, polyphony, and sustained momentum. This program captures Glass at his most personal, bridging meditative serenity with virtuosic technical discipline. Admission to the event is free, and refreshments will be provided.

Join us at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art for the opening reception of "Sebastian Thomas: Always the Moon and the Sun" on Tuesday, August 25, 3–5 PM. Light refreshments will be served. Reservations are strongly encouraged: https://bit.ly/4xJ29Dn.

Sebastian Thomas is an American painter whose work reimagines medieval iconography through a contemporary lens, blending mythic storytelling with reflections on modern culture. Drawing from illuminated manuscripts, altar paintings, and devotional objects, he creates densely composed works made of multiple panels that stage vivid encounters between saints, beasts, and heroes, using allegories to communicate ideas that resonate across centuries. His intricate surfaces and luminous palettes merge the richness of International Gothic painting with the wit and irreverence of popular culture.

Thomas formulates his own casein paints using traditional methods, treating craftsmanship as an act of devotion. Many of his works are assembled from interlocking panels connected with French cleats, a modular format that allows for reconfiguration and narrative play. Across these ornate tableaux, female protagonists including martyrs, sphinxes, and warriors emerge as central figures, embodying intelligence, resilience, and spiritual agency. By reviving premodern visual languages, Thomas critiques the technological and social hierarchies of the present, envisioning a world where mythic imagination resists digital domination.

The exhibition will be on view through March 27, 2027.

Today at noon in the Payson Library Surfboard Room, Pepperdine Libraries is pleased to present a panel discussion exploring Seaver College professor of English Michael Ditmore's latest book, "Texting the Nation: Agencies and Actions in the Declaration of Independence" (Routledge, 2026). In the text, Ditmore analyzes the language, grammar, and rhetoric of the U.S. Declaration of Independence to reveal how its structure shapes ideas of political agency and authority. It examines the document's drafting and editing process while tracing its intellectual roots in Virginia political thought. Joining the panel are Tim Perrin, senior vice president for strategic implementation, and Lisa Smith, assistant professor of teaching of English.
