Pedal into autumn with us! 🚲🥮 Join Chinese Culture Connection and Bike to the Sea for Bike to the Moon! on Sunday, September 20.

We’re celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with a scenic 12-mile round-trip community ride from Malden to Marshview Park in Lynn—followed by an after-bike celebration back at the Bike Kitchen with sweet treats, crafts, and music!

LEARNING CULTURE THROUGH CRAFTS

“亲手”认识中国文化

在我们的档案中，最不缺的就是小朋友们参加CCC活动的照片。所以今天的帖子是一次比特别的，关于CCC通过手工制作，把中国文化带进学校课堂和社区活动的特辑。我们聚焦1993年CCC带领社区孩子们学习折纸、灯笼、中国结和绘画，也接触中文、音乐与京剧。对CCC而言，手工本身只是起点，每一次亲手制作，都可以成为认识其背后历史、文化含义和生活方式的机会。

In 1993, CCC brought Chinese culture into classrooms and community workshops through hands on craft making. Students folded paper, made lanterns and knots, painted, listened to music, and explored Chinese characters and opera. For us, the craft itself was only the beginning. Each activity opened a conversation about the history, meanings, and everyday culture behind what students were making.

📁 CCC ARCHIVE | No.04 | FROM CULTURAL EXCHANGE TO COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

Our last archive entry followed CCC from classrooms into the community. This chapter looks at how those connections gradually developed into deeper partnerships with public institutions and the city of Malden.
State recognition helped CCC bring cultural programs to wider audiences. In Malden, collaboration with the public library and Cultural Council created spaces for local artists and residents to meet. Later, conversations with city leaders brought that relationship into civic life, connecting cultural exchange with community participation and public services.

On Aug 29th, we partnered with Revere Youth In Action (RYiA), La Comunidad, and NUBE to dial over 16,000 residents across Revere, Malden, Everett, and East Boston.

Our youngest Malden students—ages 12 and 13—were the youngest participants at the event. They picked up the system in no time and dialed like total pros!

Our first two archive entries traced CCC’s beginnings through Catherine Hsu’s early exhibitions, China Day, and the Songzhu Sisters Association. This chapter follows how those efforts grew into cultural exchange across Massachusetts schools and communities.
In 1990, Catherine wrote in Sampan that CCC hoped to address racial tension by “going to the source instead of the symptom.” CCC brought calligraphy, painting, knotting, music, dance, language, and paper folding into classrooms, where students learned through direct participation.

By 1991, teachers and students wrote that these workshops made culture “come alive.” For Catherine, the exchange worked both ways. It introduced young people to Chinese culture while helping Chinese immigrants participate in community life without leaving their own culture behind.

我们在前两期档案回顾了王启华女士早期的文化展览、China Day和松竹姐妹会。本期继续追踪这些尝试如何走进麻州各地的学校与社区。

1990年，王启华女士在《Sampan》中写道，CCC希望从问题的“源头”回应种族偏见。协会把书法、绘画、中国结、音乐、舞蹈、中文和折纸带进课堂，让学生通过亲手参与认识中国文化。

到了1991年，师生写道，这些活动让文化真正“活了起来”。对王启华女士而言，交流也是双向的。它既让年轻人了解中国文化，也让华人移民能够带着自己的文化参与社区生活。

On August 22, we enjoyed an amazing showcase featuring 14 performances from our talented seniors — from martial arts and singing to instrumental music and dance! 🎶🥋💃

Every performance was filled with energy, joy, and spirit, reminding us that staying active, engaged, and connected is something to celebrate at every age. ✨
