Pattern #029: The TETRA Pencil Case starts as one square of fabric and one of lining, joined into a tube along a single zip.

The trick? The first end is sewn flat with the zip in the middle. The second is turned a quarter turn before it closes, and the tube folds itself into a wedge.

Two sizes, fully lined, only straight seams. The large holds pencils and a ruler. The small holds brushes or cables. Skill level: advanced beginner.

A difficult final seam often starts with an earlier decision.

A flat scrap won't show you every lining layer, support layer, and folded allowance in your finished seam.

Before sewing the bag:

1. Build a sample of the actual seam stack.
2. Include every layer and fold that enters that seam.
3. Sew with the same needle, thread and settings you'll use.
4. Inspect the stitching on both sides.

If you see skipped stitches, uneven formation, needle deflection, or strong handwheel resistance—stop. Change one variable, then test again.

When fabric gets difficult, most of us reach for a bigger needle. It's usually the wrong move.

The smaller the needle, the finer your stitching. Always choose the smallest suitable needle for your fabric — those large, rough holes in a seam almost always come from a needle that's too big. ✨

And the second thing nobody mentions: needles wear out after roughly 8–10 sewing hours. A fresh needle at the start of every project is the cheapest upgrade there is. 🧵
