๐ŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Our 2026 Florida Math Kangaroo State Winners! ๐ŸŽ‰

Today, we celebrate the hard work, perseverance, and mathematical excellence of our amazing students who participated in the 2026 Math Kangaroo Competition!

Math Kangaroo is an international mathematics competition that challenges students to think critically, solve creative problems, and develop a love for mathematics. We are incredibly proud of every student who took on this challenge and represented our community with curiosity, determination, and enthusiasm.

๐Ÿ‘ A special congratulations to our award recipients and top performers! Your dedication to learning and problem-solving is truly inspiring.

We would also like to thank our families, volunteers, educators, and our fearless OMC director Rita Azbel and team for supporting our students throughout their mathematical journey.

Remember: Mathematics is not about being the fastestโ€”itโ€™s about exploring ideas, thinking deeply, and never giving up when faced with a challenge.

๐ŸŒŸ Keep asking questions.
๐ŸŒŸ Keep solving problems.
๐ŸŒŸ Keep reaching for new heights.

Congratulations to all of our 2026 Math Kangaroo participants and winners! We canโ€™t wait to see what you accomplish next.

๐Ÿ”ท๐Ÿ”ถ Today- pattern blocks and tiling ๐Ÿ”ถ๐Ÿ”ท

At todayโ€™s Future United STEAM Day hosted by at Seminole State College, Orlando Math Circle brought something most 7th graders havenโ€™t touched since elementary school: pattern blocks and tessellations. And wow โ€” they explored, created and made connections this has with the modern world. ๐Ÿคฉ

These students built stunning geometric designs using mirrors, pattern blocks, and pure creative curiosity. Did you know tiling shows up in:

๐Ÿ”ฌ Crystallography โ€” the atomic structure of periodic crystals is literally a tiling pattern
๐Ÿฆ  Virology โ€” many virus capsids (like the flu!) self-assemble in near-perfect geometric tilings
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Architecture & engineering โ€” from honeycomb structures to floor mosaics
๐Ÿ“ก Signal processing โ€” wavelet transforms use tiling to compress images
๐Ÿงฌ DNA nanotechnology โ€” researchers tile DNA strands to build nanoscale structures
๐ŸŒ Islamic geometric art โ€” some of the worldโ€™s oldest known quasi-periodic tilings
๐Ÿ”ญ Penrose tilings โ€” non-repeating patterns that inspired Nobel Prizeโ€“winning discoveries in quasicrystals

Thank you to OMC volunteers who gave their time and enthusiasm to make math come alive for these students. Watching kids go from โ€œwait, whatโ€™s a tessellation?โ€ to building an infinite pattern using Morris and blocks in 20 minutes? Thatโ€™s the magic. โœจ

๐Ÿ“Œ Whatโ€™s next?
Weโ€™re excited to keep working with middle and high school students this summer โ€” stay tuned! And mark your calendars: our online facilitator training for all ages starting middle school is coming June 4th ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ โ€” details dropping soon.

First year competing at nationals and their bridge held up 98lbs with only two bridges surpassing this weight. We are proud of the team. Grateful to our parent volunteer coach, Nitin C. and to FDOT for guiding and supporting our students to succeed.

Our OMC high school team of student leaders is in Savannah at the AASHTO STEM Outreach Solutions Bridge Challenge. Our team was one of 12 teams that qualified to come to nationals. We are proud of our students and grateful to ASSHTO for organizing and Florida Department of Transportation for making this possible for our team.

๐ŸŽ‰ It's happening!

Today, our Orlando Math Circle students are walking the halls of the University of Florida as part of our annual Future Leaders Advancing in Math and Medicine Experience โ€” in partnership with the UF Math Department and the Laboratory for Systems Medicine.

This year marks the fifth year of our partnership that focuses on developing the interest and the talent of our students. Thank you to all the people at UF for making this experience possible year after year.

Our OMC alumni continue to stay connected even after graduating high school โ€” through events, alumni socials, and mentorship. ๐Ÿ’™

Raymond, now a first-year student at Duke University pursuing a degree in physics, is mentored by Dr. Jami Valentine Miller, our board member and the first African American to earn a physics PhD from Johns Hopkins University.

He also gives back to the community by volunteering at OMC events and working with students at the Boys & Girls Club โ€” the same place he attended as a student.

A full-circle journey weโ€™re incredibly proud of. โœจ
