The best way to create a solid client relationship is to stay up to date with the clients lifestyle and hear what information they want to tell you. Most clients will spend at least an hour with you and during that time period you can really get to know someone. When a client feels valued it helps position you as the expert, which creates trust, loyalty, longevity and referrals.

Being heard as a stylist can be interpreted by educating the person sitting in your salon chair. This means that when you are educating a guest during a consultation, it is very important that the guest hears and understands your vision. 👀

However, what is also very vital is that the client needs to feel like they are being heard as well. If they feel like you are properly listening to what their vision is then that leads to trust and loyalty. Once you have trust and loyalty, you create a whole new partnership that could potentially go on for years and years.

By the way it is a HUGE red flag 🚩if your stylist is not listening to what you want. And it’s even a bigger red flag 🚩 if you are not educating your clients. There should be an equal amount of listening and educating to result in the satisfaction of the partnership.

No matter how much of a magician the world thinks we are there’s still so many things we don’t have control over, especially when it comes to using chemicals.

It’s important to communicate with your clients. It’s also important to communicate all possible outcomes when it comes to putting chemicals on the hair. It’s even MORE vital to take accountability if you don’t get the result you or the client may have been expecting.

I remember the first time I was servicing a client who was referred to me for a haircut, he was getting a Mohawk. As I was talking to him, I cut the back of the Mohawk completely off, and immediately I told him what happened and apologized, offered for the service to be comped. The next service was also complimentary. I explained that the haircut would still suit him even though it’s not exactly what he came in for, however, 13 years later and he’s still a loyal client. It’s not always about the mistake, it’s how we handle the aftermath.

😬Sooo it was my 2nd year in, and one of my VIP GUEST Dimitri, was referred by his friend.....WE CONSULTED and I understood exactly what he wanted, with his MOHAWK, he loved how I cut his friend’s hair!

😱I start cutting, we start talking, the conversation gets so good.... we spoke on referrals that go wrong and BEFORE YOU KNOW IT , I CUT OFF THE MIDDLE BACK PART OFF HIS MOHAWK......and it was now in 2 pieces and there was NO MORE MOHAWK! I did the worst thing you can do as a stylist in the salon and GASSSSPPPP, and we both knew

🤯Right Away I JACKED UP!!!🤯

🤗I EXPLAINED what happened, Sincerely Apologized, gave him the best , gave him the service for FREE, then ASKED HIM TO GIVE ME ANOTHER CHANCE, and then comped the 2nd service (I was desperate 🤦🏾‍♀️), which he refused and still paid!

🤩What I thought was a huge mistake turned into Loyal Guest of 12yrs, travels over an hr away sometimes 2, has had no problem doubling his investment for his cut, and YASSS HE TIPS GREAT😜!

✨This was for sure one OF THE BEST LESSONS I learned in the earlier part of my career!

✨In this case there were no questions created from this experience however when making mistakes with chemical services, there are usually questions you could have asked that would have allowed you to plan a little different!
