Sometimes you need to get away to realize home is where you’re meant to be. When Emily Morra ’26 ’27 headed off for her first year of college, it was not to Ramapo. She had done her college search during the COVID pandemic and her parents, Suzanne and George Morra P ’26 ’27 felt that she missed out on getting a full picture of what to expect since classes were online and little activity was happening on campus.

After a "disappointing" first year away, the Mahwah resident let her parents know she wanted to transfer to Ramapo. Suzanne and Geroge say, “We were very excited when Emily told us she wanted to transfer to Ramapo. We had always thought Ramapo was a great school with so much to offer. Like many Mahwah High School students, she had initially overlooked what was right in her own backyard.” While the Morras originally thought Emily would live on campus, she decided to commute with a plan to embrace campus life. “She was excited about all the clubs, organizations, and extracurricular activities Ramapo offered and was determined to get involved and make the most of her college experience.” Emily joined several clubs and honor societies, acted as a STEM tutor on campus, and interned for the New Jersey Jackals and Center for Food Action.

As they watched her transition to the Roadrunner life, Emily's parents happily saw she had found her place. They said, “Emily’s college experience at Ramapo was everything we had hoped it would be. Transferring to Ramapo turned out to be one of the best decisions she made. She truly found her place there, building meaningful friendships with fellow students and forming strong relationships with her professors. Ramapo gave her the sense of community, support, and engagement that had been missing from her first college experience, and it allowed her to thrive both academically and personally.”

Do you know someone who is second guessing where they’re going to college? Suzanne says, “My advice is to take the time to experience each college before making a decision. If you can, visit while classes are in session so you can see the campus in action, interact with students, and get a true feel for the school's culture and atmosphere. Unfortunately, because of COVID, we missed out on that opportunity. Also, don't overlook Ramapo just because it's in your backyard. Sometimes the best opportunities are closer than you think. Ramapo has a beautiful campus and offers something for everyone - from social organizations and clubs to athletics, academic programs, and countless extracurricular activities. It truly provides students with the opportunity to have a well-rounded and rewarding college experience.”

Emily graduated this past May with her Bachelor’s of Science in Data Science and a minor in Sports Management, and is returning through our 4+1 program to complete her Master’s in Data Science in just one extra year.

A seat at the table will bring a student perspective to state-level policy decisions. When many Roadrunners are focused more than ever on receiving an affordable and accessible education, one will actually be acting as a student voice with NJ higher education decisions-makers this coming academic year. Olivia Ha ’28 will serve on the HESAA, New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority Board’s Student Advisory Committee (SAC). The perfect way to spend a summer evening! We had a "blast" at our first TD Summer Concert of the season last week, which ended with our summer fireworks show. It was fun for all ages!
