Pine Grove was founded by Mary Courtney and has been serving children and families in Putnam and northern Westchester counties, New York for more than 30 years. Mary Courtney founded Pine Grove Country Day School in 1979, after moving to Mahopac from the Bronx. Starting as a small nursery school, Mary expanded Pine Grove to provide programs for children from infancy through middle school. As a pioneer for early childhood integration programs, Mary created opportunities for all children to succeed. Her vision and dedication to creating quality daycare motivated her to found the Putnam Child Care Council. Mary’s life work was to create a warm, loving environment for children and families. Her nurturing spirit and gentle guidance inspired children, families and colleagues to grow into their truest potential. Pine Grove became an extension of her family, fostering life long relationships with members of the community. She was honored that her earliest students eagerly returned to Pine Grove with their children to receive the same loving experience they had years before. Sadly, Mary passed away this past October in Tanzania on a mission trip at a school for children in need. Her spirit lives on through her children, grandchildren and the lives of those she has touched. Mary’s three children, Thomas, Maryanne and Deborah, along with their dedicated staff, are committed to keeping her legacy alive in the many children’s smiles and laughter at Pine Grove.
