Today is Kentucky’s Arbor Day. So Mayor Cotton, some of his staff, some children and parents from Pride Elementary and the Tree Board met in Madisonville City Park to plant some trees. Mayor Cotton welcomed everyone and read the official proclamation. The children gathered around the very young Red Maple to fill in the dirt around the tree base…then finish it with mulch. Tree Board official Rich Hane instructed the attendees about filling the hole and not to allow mulch against the bark. A wonderful event.

From time to time we like to remind our caring citizens of all the ways we have worked and planted in the community. Here are some photos from plantings in our parks, our public areas , our Historical Society and invited schools to participate . Thank you for your support and appreciation.

TREES IN JANUARY. 🪾
Trees in town in January are dormant but may need care. If we have experienced a drought, deep water them during warmer weather. Mulching helps protect the roots from winter stress bu keep the mulch away from the trunks. Protect young trees by wrapping the trunks to protect from frost. Remove during sun light. Protect them from salt run off from the city applying salt during snow. Some trees actually have beautiful bark that shows when the leaves are gone- like white birch.

It’s a new age. Nature is so important to our earth. If you are someone who must have a live tree for Christmas…….consider a replantable tree. There are several places in the tri-state that sell them. Then your yard or a friends will have beautiful evergreens ……planted in a line are spectacular. We congratulate the city of Madisonville for using its huge artificial every year rather than cutting down a beautiful live treee- just to die for decoration.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR FALL LEAVES🍁🍂
COMPOST—- composting fallen leaves is a cleaver way to create nutrient rich garden soil.
LEAF MOLD- molding is beneficial due to nutrients they hold. The average tree stores 80% of its nutrients & minerals in its leaves. Recycle these leaves in your garden.
LEAF MULCH- also chop tree branches, bark & trimmings and add for your vegetables crops, berries & ornamental shrubs. ( always shred first).
MAKES CRAFTS-…children loves making crafts from them.

Fall is an ideal time to plant trees,September through November. Warm soil encourages root growth while cool air reduces stress. Once you place it in the whole you’ve dug spread the roots. Water often but don’t stomp the soil. Mulch helps but not against the tree bark. Good trees for wildlife are Oak, Beech, Chestnut and Crabapple. Trees good for small yards are Redbud, Dogwood, Yellowbud. Plant and enjoy 👍

A U G U S T
This month let’s talk about an unusual tree we don’t see often. The Willow tree, or Salix Babylonica , is found in temperate and cold regions in moist soils. A Willow will regrow to 35 - 50 feet tall. It looses its leaves in winter. It’s bark was once used for a natural medicine to alleviate pain & inflammation. A Weeping Willow is characterized by distinctive drooping branches that cascade downward——- creating a beautiful tree.
This tree is from a yard in Madisonville. Enjoy ✨
