One City Schools

One City Schools One City Schools is a Madison, WI-based nonprofit operator of high quality Prek to grade 12 schools. We look forward to talking with you. Thank you!

One City Schools is a Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization that provides high quality educational opportunities for young children. Our mission is to seed a new model of public education that ensures young children are on track to succeed in a college or career preparatory program from birth through high school graduation. Our vision is of a Greater Madison community where there are no persisten

t achievement and opportunity gaps, and where all children are prepared to contribute and succeed as adults. To this end, One City’s goal is to ensure young children are prepared to read, compute and succeed at grade level by the time they reach first grade. More importantly, we aim to partner with families and the broader community to cultivate children who become free, global and deep thinkers, curious learners, effective problem solvers, humanitarians, happy people and young people who care about the world around them. Currently, One City operates two schools: One City Preschool, an accredited 5-star preschool serving children ages 1 - 3 and One City Expeditionary Elementary School, a public charter elementary school that presently enrolls children in 4K through second grade, and will add additional grades annually through grade 6. One City Preschool is accredited by the City of Madison and was awarded 5 (of 5) stars through Wisconsin's YoungStar Child Care Rating System. Our Preschool was awarded Best of Madison in Child Care in 2018. One City Expeditionary Elementary School (OCEES) is a unique, two-generation public school, authorized by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents, that provides a tuition-free education to children in grades 4K through Grade 2 in South Madison (Note: We will add a minimum of one grade per year until we reach grade 6) and works directly with families to ensure children are learning, inspired and making solid progress. We also have a longer school year (219 days vs 180 days in traditional public schools) and a longer school day (8:15am to 5pm daily), including 90-minute co-curricular learning academies in Sports, Fitness, STEM and Creative and Performing Arts. OCEES is also an EL Education Network School, offering the highly regarded Expeditionary Learning curriculum in kindergarten through second grade (and eventually through grade 6). Our 4K program is built exclusively around the AnjiPlay program from Anji, China. AnjiPlay will also serve as a supplement to children in Kindergarten and above as well. PARENT ENGAGEMENT AND SUPPORT

Children aren't the only ones who enroll in One City, parents do, too. Through a robust network of partnerships, we offer informative, insightful and fun seminars, workshops, special events and other learning activities for parents and the entire family. We were the first school (preschool to high school) to re-introduce the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program to parents in Madison and offer this to our families both in-person and virtually with children enrolled in our preschool and elementary school. This internationally acclaimed, engaging, fun and award winning program builds strong bonds between parents and their children, One City families, and families and our school. Congratulations to our One City Family! 💙

It's time to celebrate! We are thrilled for our new homeowners, Ceotrid and Marlita. They have a home for their family, stability, security, built-in equity, and a way to build generational wealth for their children. They have proof that it's possible. Their dreams, hard work, and commitment to their goals - it's possible.

What if the community could be the wealth that Black and brown families have been explicitly denied? The impact will ripple and create the change we are committed to. This is the vision.

Thank you, Own It Ambassador Pete Waite, Madison, Wisconsin 608-576-5865 The Stark Company and UW Credit Union, Own It Supporters.

Thank you to our community partner, One City Schools, the instructors, the mentors, and the behind-the-scenes team that helped make this happen.

Most importantly, thank you to Ceotrid and Marlita for believing it could happen and working hard to get to that closing table!

Exciting news for UFLI and Project Read!

Exciting news for UFLI and Project Read!

We’re thrilled to share that Project Read AI and University of Florida Literacy Institute have been selected as part of the LEVI Literacy cohort!

Through Renaissance Philanthropy’s Learning Engineering Virtual Institute (LEVI), we’ll work alongside three other teams toward our moonshot goal of halving the number of struggling K-2 readers.

Project Read x UFLI pairs the student-facing Project Read Tutor with the educator-facing UFLI Assessment and Planning Portal, both built on top of the UFLI Foundations phonics curriculum.

Using the Project Read Tutor, students practice oral reading and spelling which listens as they read aloud and gives real-time feedback with grapheme-phoneme precision. Teachers use the UFLI Portal to save hours each month, turning their weekly assessment data into differentiated small group lesson plans.

Connecting these tools together allows educators to systematically identify and target student skills gaps more granularly than ever before.

We’re honored to contribute our expertise to this effort and look forward to collaborating with researchers, educators, and innovators to improve literacy outcomes for young learners.

As we close out the 2025–26 school year, we want to recognize a few of our incredible 8th-grade families who truly embodied what it means to be a One City community as former FAST Families & Schools Together participants.

These families were more than parents to their own scholars. They were "Transportation Partners" and "Community Champions" for so many others. Whether coordinating carpools, giving scholars rides, helping families overcome transportation challenges, or simply making sure scholars arrived safely to and from school, they consistently stepped up whenever help or support was needed.

As their 8th graders move on to high school in 2026-27, we know their presence will be deeply missed. Thank you for modeling what community, service, and family partnership look like. Your impact extends far beyond your own child. You helped strengthen the entire One City family.

Please join us in celebrating these outstanding families for helping make One City Schools a place where we all look out for one another. Limited seats remain. Enroll your rising 4K - 8th grade scholar today at onecityschools.org.
