β›³ JOE HILL CHARITY GOLF FUNDRAISER to benefit One City Schools in Madison, Wisconsin β›³

If you knew Mr. Joseph Dee Hill, you knew he loved two things on a golf course: the game and the trash talk. He was a founding member of Madison's annual "Trash Talking Golf Invitational," and he brought that same joy, wit, and love for community everywhere he went.

He was also the first Black attorney I met. He was a trailblazer and a mentor. He worked with Madison's school truancy and expulsion program because he believed every young person deserved a second chance. In his final wishes, Mr. Hill (as I called him) asked that remembrances in his name be directed to One City Schools, because even at the end, he was investing in the next generation and always supporting me.

Now it's our turn to honor his legacy. πŸ™πŸΎ

Dear Mothers, On this special day, I want to take a moment to honor you.

To the mothers who entrust us with your children every day, thank you. You are the reason One City exists. Every morning when your child walks through our doors, you are placing one of the most precious things in your life in our care, and we do not take that lightly. We see the early mornings, the late nights, the second and third shifts, the way you advocate for your child when the world doesn't always make it easy. We are honored to walk alongside you.

To the mothers among our partners, donors, and supporters, thank you. You give of your time, your resources, and your wisdom because you believe every child deserves a real shot at a great future. Many of you do this while raising your own children, mentoring others, and carrying the weight of so many other commitments. We are better for having you in our circle.

To the grandmothers, aunties, foster mothers, godmothers, and chosen mothers, today is yours, too. A child is shaped by whoever chooses to stay, whoever shows up consistently, and whoever loves them through the hard parts and helps facilitate what they’re becoming. That is mothering.

I think often about the women who raised me. My grandmother and my aunts stepped in when my biological mother could not, and my father was nowhere to be found. They fed me, corrected me, prayed over me, and made sure I knew I was loved, even when life was not easy for them either.

Beyond my family, there were women in my community who helped mold me, who poured wisdom and belief into me, and who, all these years later, are still in my corner. I would not be who I am, or where I am, without them. Every time I walk into One City, I carry their love with me. And I see that same love in so many of you, the women who are stepping in, staying, and shaping children who will one day say the same about you, and do the same for their children and others.

You are the first teacher most of our Scholars will ever have, and the first lesson is love. The way you hold them today shapes how they will hold the world tomorrow. Everything we do at One City is built on the foundation you lay at home.

So today, please take whatever rest, joy, and love comes your way. Hold it tightly. You deserve all of it and more.

From all of us at One City, Happy Mother's Day!

With gratitude, we love and appreciate you. Onward!
