Yesterday, Friday, June 19th, our school day began with our annual outdoor Juneteenth assembly led by Middle School Principal, Mr. Ayo, where scholars, staff, and families came together to celebrate freedom, resilience and community.

Throughout the day, scholars deepened their understanding of Juneteenth through a special "Knowledge Walk" brought to life by our dedicated staff, the Cultural Display Task Force. The interactive experience featured historical facts to read, artifacts and replicas to touch; and opportunities to learn about the significance of June 19, 1865 and the ongoing journey toward freedom and equality.

The celebration continued today, Saturday, June 20th as One City scholars, families, and staff proudly participated in Madison's 37th Annual Juneteenth Parade! Our talented One City drummers, led by own African drumming Teacher, Ms. Shields, represented our school with energy and pride, while families joined thousands of community members in celebrating Black history, culture, achievement and excellence throughout the afternoon.

At One City Schools, we believe it is important not only to teach history, but to help scholars experience it, reflect on it, and understand how it shapes the world around them.

With a heavy heart, we are sharing that our Read Dane: 3,000 Strong launch rally has been moved from June 19 to Friday, June 26, 2026, out of deep respect for the life and legacy of Michael Johnson, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, who recently passed away.

We’re bringing together community leaders to train 1,000 parents, 1,000 tutors, and 1,000 educators and ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.

⛳ JOE HILL CHARITY GOLF FUNDRAISER to benefit One City Schools in Madison, Wisconsin ⛳

If you knew Mr. Joseph Dee Hill, you knew he loved two things on a golf course: the game and the trash talk. He was a founding member of Madison's annual "Trash Talking Golf Invitational," and he brought that same joy, wit, and love for community everywhere he went.

He was also the first Black attorney I met. He was a trailblazer and a mentor. He worked with Madison's school truancy and expulsion program because he believed every young person deserved a second chance. In his final wishes, Mr. Hill (as I called him) asked that remembrances in his name be directed to One City Schools, because even at the end, he was investing in the next generation and always supporting me.

Now it's our turn to honor his legacy. 🙏🏾
