“It means a lot to be there for our community in their most vulnerable moments. In order to be fully present with our patients, we need full staffing, resources, and support. Instead, SSM Health is doing the opposite by constantly piling more and more duties onto us and stretching us so thin that it is not sustainable. We’re always feeling like we can’t do enough, can’t help all our brand new nurses, can’t do as good a job as we want. Our staffing ratios are exhausting to the core of our beings. It feels like picking your battles every moment of every day, on top of not getting our breaks to eat. There’s one and only one way this is ever going to change: Nurses need to have real input into the decision-making process through our union. It just doesn’t make sense to only have business executives setting all the policies without any professional, frontline nurse input. With our union, we will be a part of the conversation and it will matter what we say. We will sit down at a table and negotiate a strong, legally-binding union contract with the staffing, retention and supportive policies we deserve.”
