Madison City Schools is a strong supporter of programs that help students from military families. Every school across the district has an S2S (student-to-student) organization which helps newcomer kids (both military and non-military related) transition to their new school as well as engaging in service projects.
Tonight, the MCS Board recognized one of its elementary schools and one of its middle schools for national placement in Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) competition.
Liberty Middle School won the 2026 MCEC S2S Middle School Team of the Year award.
Heritage Elementary's S2S group won the national MCEC S2S Elite team of the year.
This is a phenomenal honor to have a middle school and elementary school from the same district winning at the national level.
In addition to the team awards, James Clemens High School senior Savannah Getter earned a 3rd place award along with a $300 prize in the Honoring Veteran Legacies Eternal Salute essay contest. Her teacher, Kimberly Stoecker, was also awarded a $300 cash prize as sponsor.
In her essay, "Heroes Without a Welcome," Savannah explores how the controversies of the Vietnam War impacted the treatment of returning veterans. Drawing from one veteran's personal experience, she details the lack of recognition many service members faced and concludes by emphasizing our collective responsibility to honor their sacrifice and dedication.
Mrs. Erin Coggins with Honoring Veterans Legacy non-profit, accompanied MCS administrator to the podium for the school and student recognitions.
School winner S2S advisors at tonight's meeting were Kitty Mingus and (now retired) Benita Tunstill at Liberty Middle; and Amber Moore, Jamie Ratcliff and Casey Hargis at Heritage Elementary.

Discovery Middle School has a new assistant principal.
Armesha Pennington-Marchbanks was approved by the Madison City Board of Education tonight. She replaces Jasmine Simpson, who is now an assistant principal at Bob Jones High School.
Ms. Marchbanks thanked the board, Mr. Terrell and Principal Kate Wade for approving her for the position, one that she said she does not take lightly in serving the students, teachers and DMS.
Ms. Marchbanks comes from Sparkman Intermediate School where she taught 6th grade history. She spent 12 years at Huntsville City Schools teaching AP U.S. History at Grissom High School.
She earned her undergraduate degree from Mississippi University for Women and a masters' degree in instructional leadership from the University of West Alabama.
Accompanying her to tonight's meeting were her daughter, Kensley Marchbanks, 18; and son C.J. Marchbanks, 11.

MADISON BOWL MESSAGE 2026

This Friday night (September 4th) will be an exciting evening for MCS and the Madison community as our two high schools compete in the Madison Bowl.

While rivalries are fun,, I would like to emphasize the importance of kindness, patience and sportsmanship by those who attend all of our athletic events.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, spectators and students are expected to follow the MCS Stadium Guidelines:

Clear Bag Policy:
*A clear bag policy is in effect for all varsity football games.
*Backpacks and coolers are not allowed.
*Only small purses, diaper bags, and medical bags are permitted.
*Oversized bags must result in denied entry. All bags are subject to search.

Prohibited Items:
*Weapons of any kind (including knives and fi****ms) are strictly prohibited.
*To***co, alcohol, drugs, and va**ng devices are not allowed on MCS property.

Stadium Conduct:
*Walkways and elevated areas must remain clear. Private security will assist in maintaining these areas.
*No running or tossing of balls inside the stadium.
*Field access is restricted to those with proper credentials.
*Anyone leaving the stadium will be required to repay admission to re-enter.
*All MCS students are subject to the MCS Code of Student Conduct during events.

Student Supervision:
*Parents of elementary and middle school students are strongly encouraged to attend the game with their children.
*If a parent is not attending, please ensure another responsible adult will accompany the child and serve as an emergency contact.

General Expectations:
*Spectators are expected to be respectful and follow all stadium rules.
*Those who fail to comply may be asked to leave without a refund and may not be permitted to return.
*Loitering after the game has ended is not permitted.

Thank you for your efforts in helping us maintain a safe and positive environment for everyone. We eagerly anticipate an exciting and respectful evening of football, featuring performances by the band, dance team, color guard, JROTC, cheerleaders, as well as a sense of community.

Changing Destructive Adolescent Behavior is the subject of an upcoming Parent Talk class for Madison City parents.
This 10-week class, held each Wednesday, begins September 16th and is geared for parents of children ages 12-18.
There are still just a few slots left for this helpful seminar led by the social workers team at Madison City Schools. Classes are 8:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at the Madison City Schools Central Office board room, 211 Celtic Drive in Madison.

Looking for a new car?
Here's an opportunity this Friday to test drive one for a cause.
A local car dealership will make donations to Madison City Schools for every test drive of one of their vehicles that will be staged in the MCS Central Office parking lot on Sept. 4.
If you are in the market for a vehicle, Woody Anderson will have a number of vehicles and reps on hand in a sectioned off area at the CO for display, test drives, and information. The event goes from 7 am. to 4 p.m. that day.
