Question for the laser crowd. What lens are you running for photos?

On our CO2 we're running a 2 inch lens right now. On the fiber we usually run photos with the 300mm lens. We know the 175mm lens gives a tighter focal dot, but there's a reason we work with the bigger lens and the bigger dot size. With the 300mm we can do larger work areas and full scene photos that the smaller lens can't fit.

What are you running for photos, and if you could go back, what would you have bought instead?

If you like talking shop like this, come join us in Laser Photo Engraving for Beginners. Beginners and old hands are both welcome.

I wouldn't trust any laser to show up in perfect focus after shipping. Checking your focal stick is one more step to make sure your machine is running at its best.

Prop a scrap of wood at an angle under the head and run one straight line down the slope. Find the thinnest, sharpest spot on that line and measure from there up to the same place your factory stick measures to. That's your real focal distance. Then cut a new stick at that length out of acrylic on the laser.

The clear one is the factory stick from our AP Lazer and the black one is the new one after the ramp test. We had to make one for our OMTech too. Shape doesn't matter as long as the distance is right.

You might find yours is dead on, or you might find it's off. Anybody run one of these and find out?

Update on this one.

If you remember last week, my attempt on this stone failed after a good poster board test (still don't know why). Before I could get back to it, the other half of our shop, John Howard, took it on and pulled it off.

Credit where credit is due. It turned out great.

Keep burning and learning.

A pet memorial mini headstone, done for a local monument company.

We wanted to strip the background out of the photo but the family wanted it left in, so it stayed in. Sometimes the background can fight you when you're trying to get the detail in the actual subject.

Pet photos are almost never good to start with because not many people take portrait style photos of their animals. So what you usually get is a cell phone picture of the animal moving.

These came in old and faded. Hers had a crease running through it.

Top is what the family approved after editing. Bottom is what came from the stone.

An older picture is not a lost cause. Nearly all of it is prep work before the file ever reaches the laser, and that is most of what we teach now. 🕊

Running some test of these new templates. Cast black acrylic, 30 watt fiber laser.
Dropped the photo in, flattened it into one image, then added the text with an offset. Came out clean.

Full scene on a 24x12 black granite tile. This one goes back a few years now.
If you are running full scenes on the larger tiles, watch for warpage. Some of them are not dead flat, and on a scene this size you will see it in the engraving as a soft spot long before you would ever notice it holding the tile in your hand. Set it on the bed and check it before you start. Shim it if you have to.
The smaller tiles give you a lot less trouble with this.

Finishing out the text on this small black granite headstone engraved on the AP 2816 80w Co2. Photo turned out alright but I see things I could have changed to get more details. If I did it over I would have gone darker with it.
