CALLING ALL ART STUDENTS: The annual Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Road Safety Art Contest is underway! Students in grades K-12 are invited to use their creativity to raise awareness of how to stay safe on the road, particularly when driving, biking, or walking around large trucks and buses.

Flash flooding can occur anywhere. Never attempt to cross a water covered road – just 12 inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the road.

Distracted driving is involved in more than 9,000 crashes every year in Wisconsin. Cell phone use is all too common, and it distracts you in three different ways:

👀Takes your eyes off the road
🤳Takes your hands off the wheel
🧠Takes your mind off of driving

Every time you get behind the wheel, eliminate distractions and stay focused on what’s ahead.

PREPARE FOR THE COLD: Schools and other organizations are closing tomorrow due to the dangerously cold temperatures. If you must travel, we want you to be safe on the roads:

✅ Keep your tires properly inflated – tire pressure can decrease by about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees the outside air temperature drops.
✅ Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with extra food and warm clothing.
✅ Keep your fuel tank at least half-full to prevent fuel lines from freezing and to provide extra fuel in case you get stranded.
✅ If you slide off the road or get stranded, stay buckled up in your vehicle and call for help. Getting out of your vehicle can be dangerous, especially in freezing temperatures.

Extremely cold temperatures are expected across the state tonight through Saturday.

The road salt melting process takes more time to activate in cold temperatures like we’re seeing. Expect slippery conditions – slow down and increase your following distance. Remember to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with extra food and warm clothing in case you get stranded.

The next round of funding is now available for Wisconsin’s Driver Education Grant Program. Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch may apply to have their classroom and behind-the-wheel driver training for a Class D (Regular) driver license paid for.
