“This week, like most weeks, somebody in Washington is working to hand a piece of public land to someone who wants to drill it, log it, mine it, or sell it. That’s the job we signed up to fight, and some days the fight is exhausting.

When it is, we go back to the people who said it first and said it best. Here’s what’s worth noticing about them. A Republican president signed the first one into law in the middle of the Civil War. A Democratic president wrote another in the depths of the Depression. A senator, a biologist, a canoe country guide, and a self-described desert rat filled in the rest.
