is a non-profit organization that works with educators and others to promote international learning, global awareness and cross-cultural connections across Wisconsin. GWI works with educators from around the state and the Department of Public of Public Instruction to support the Global Schools Network and advance the goals of Wisconsin's Global Education Achievement Certificate.

In my previous post, I talked about the broad lessons I learned as an exchange student. This week, I want to point out that such cross-cultural student exchange experiences aren't possible without host families.
I am forever grateful to the family that hosted me. And, after all these years, I'm still in contact and have visited them several times.
Hosting an exchange student comes with challenges and benefits. I've found that the latter generally outweighs the former. I've hosted and I often encourage other families to host, when their situation and timing are right.

One way to become more of a global citizen is to become an exchange student. My experience as an exchange student changed my life. At the age of 17, I went to Micronesia (small islands in the Pacific), where I lived with a family on the island of Saipan. This experience inspired to pursue a career in journalism. On a personal level, I gained much more, which I talk about in my blog this week.
