Staying organized is tricky - whether it's balancing school, work, or social commitments. We are in the day and age where you might keep a written planner but leave notes or calendar holds in your phone. With all this craziness (not to mention event invites on Facebook and email reminders), it can be hard to keep track of everything. Topics to ask your mentor - how do they stay organized? Do they color-code or keep calendars separate for work and fun? What works best? What happened when you had to deal with double- or triple-booking? How do you prioritize?

It's a sunny, beautiful Sunday in Madison. Even though you may be watching the Packers or hiking the Picnic Point trails, what can you do to improve your career savvy? Try breaking things into small steps: 1) Update some skills you've learned in classes on your LinkedIn page. 2) Email a professor and ask them a question about their own professional experiences. 3) Find an industry journal that interests you and read a few articles. You never know when it could help you!

November is National Novel Writing Month! While writing may not be your thing, NNWM is all about goal-setting and motivating ourselves. It's a good thing to learn how others are motivated to pursue their goals. Here are some topics you may wish to discuss with your mentor:
1) What short and long term goals did you set after graduating?
2) How did you pursue non-academic goals (i.e. career, personal, etc.) during undergrad?
3) What have you found most effective in motivating yourself to work on your goals?
4) What is the hardest goal you've ever accomplished?
5) Why is it important for you to set goals?

In a Brand Management class, my professor talked about the importance of cultural marketing - understanding the world around us and the news people process to zero in on what's actually on people's minds (rather than attempting to put a product in one's mind). All that translates to being up on current issues. TheSkimm is a quick daily summary of the news emailed to you each morning!
