Participate in a Focus Group on Reproductive Health Experiences in Iowa and Receive $60 Cash!

The Reproductive Health Experiences and Access (RHEA) research study is recruiting participants for 90-minute focus group discussions about getting reproductive health care in Iowa. The groups will meet in two places next week:
- Fort Dodge: Tuesday, November 4 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM
- Downtown Des Moines: Wednesday, November 5 from 6:00 - 7:30pm

If you’re an 18–49-year-old woman, non-binary, or trans person assigned female at birth and are interested in signing up for the group, please contact the research team by calling/texting 202-643-2179 or emailing [email protected].

Introducing REAL Vocabulary — a new series from the Reproductive Equity Action Lab (REAL) where we break down key terms we use in our work every day. We’re here to define, demystify, and make this language accessible to everyone, across communities and across fields.

First up: Title X
This federal program funds birth control, STI testing, cancer screenings, and more—making reproductive care possible for millions, especially folks with low incomes or without insurance. It’s a pillar of reproductive health equity in the U.S.
But that access is under threat.

Check out Emmy Burroughs’ article for the Urban Institute on how the Trump administration’s freeze on Title X funds is already disrupting care across the country. Restricting Title X doesn’t just cut budgets—it cuts off care.

Read our new Policy Research Brief!

Our team is excited to share a brief we prepared in response to Governor Evers’ state budget proposal that included funding to eliminate the enforcement of Birth Cost Recovery in Wisconsin. We were able to lift the voices of impacted Black Wisconsin parents-sharing quotes from the interviews we conducted as part of our ongoing research on the project.

A huge congratulations to REAL’s Dr. Tiffany Green, for the latest publication in WMJ (Wisconsin Medical Journal) Volume 123, Issue 6!

Title: Abortion Access and Birth-related Outcomes and Inequities: A Call to Dismantle Abortion Restrictions in Wisconsin to Improve Health and Well-being

Authors: Jenny Higgins, PhD; Jane W. Seymour, PhD; Tiffany Green, PhD

This commentary examines the impact of abortion restrictions on birth-related outcomes and inequities in Wisconsin. The authors highlight that abortion bans disproportionately harm marginalized populations, particularly Black, Brown, Indigenous, and low-income communities. Restricting access to abortion increases maternal morbidity and mortality, exacerbates mental health stressors, and limits reproductive autonomy. The commentary calls for dismantling Wisconsin’s abortion restrictions to improve birth equity and overall health outcomes. The authors emphasize that reproductive justice must include access to abortion as a fundamental component of maternal and child health policy​.
