I just returned from a university tour in Wales, and I have to say: this trip genuinely changed the way I think about international options for my students.
Wales is home to some of the UK’s most distinctive universities. Aberystwyth sits right on the sea. Bangor is tucked between mountains and the Menai Strait, with a castle practically next door. Cardiff is a vibrant, walkable capital city. Each campus has its own character, and every administrator, admissions officer, and student I met was warm, engaged, and genuinely excited to talk about their institution.
What struck me most: these are deeply student-focused places. Smaller communities, accessible faculty, strong support structures. Not small in ambition, just in all the right ways.
And here is the part families need to hear: a full undergraduate degree in Wales can cost less than a single year at many US private universities. That is not a typo.
It is also not remote. Cardiff is a quick train ride from London. Bangor is easy from Manchester. The infrastructure is there, the cities are real, and the adventure is real too: seaside towns, hiking in Snowdonia, medieval castles around every corner.
Oh, and one more thing: skip the marmite. Trust me on this one.
