This fall, our school-wide intention is "rekindling imagination". As we prepare for the new school year, and take some time to reset our classrooms, we met as a staff to talk about the importance of imagination, and how we can restore our own imaginations.

We did some collaborative drawings, choosing objects that represent our imaginations - disco balls, drawing mannequins, flowers, owls, pinwheels, boats

Wheels Day is one of our favorite summer traditions. We close the parking lot, and everyone is invited to bring their favorite wheels - bikes, scooters, skateboards, office chairs - anything goes!

Continuing our work rethinking our trash, with the Art and Music Specialists we re-used discarded items to make instruments. We set up an "instrument workshop" with centers dedicated to different types of music-making - strumming, drumming, and shaking.

First Hannah showed the children examples of the instruments, then the children migrated between the drumming, strumming, and shaking tables, finally they chose one instrument to bring back to the rug and play in a "concert" led by Hannah on guitar.

"When you put all of these inside, it can make loud sounds. Do you wanna hear what my instrument sounds like? Do you?"
"I have two drums, they are big ones!"
"I love the way that sounds!"

We love Wednesdays, because we love saying hi to William, our waste collector! He is the best. He always greets us with a wave, a smile, and of course a couple honks of the big garbage truck!

Today was our annual Freedom Fest - a celebration of Pride Month, the Fourth of July, and Juneteenth. We danced, played with bubbles, hit our director Penny with sponges, and had a big old party. Happy Freedom Fest!

Inspired by our recent work using plastic "waste" materials to create art, children had the opportunity to make loose parts self-portraits. Which one do you identify with today?

"What could this be? Maybe hair? Or a mouth?"
"I have a traffic cone nose!"
"This is my nose. A train track that can be my...mouth!"

This summer, PSA has been lucky to host Dane County Department of Waste + Renewables Trash Lab and the artist . Together, these visits have made us rethink our relationship with "waste", focus our creative work on the potentiality of objects that might otherwise be thrown out and end up in a landfill.

Hilary Christensen is an artist who works almost exclusively with items that she terms "junk". Hilary visited PSA to talk about her process and work with the children art pieces inspired by her art. Hilary graciously allowed PSA to exhibit a few pieces of her art before her upcoming exhibit at the Overture Center opening in September.

"Trash Lab is so fun!!! And you know what? We're helping the earth and making art at the same time!"

"I can't believe that someone was going to throw these away! This is all great stuff! These things seem pretty much great to me. I don't even know why they would throw it away!"
