Another full day of hands-on scenarios complete—and the momentum is building.

Each challenge our students face brings them one step closer to their capstone: ambulance field time. This is where training meets reality, and confidence turns into competence.

We’re proud to watch them grow, adapt, and rise to the moment. The future of EMS is getting stronger every day.

During the open house, we misspoke about compensation for ambulance ride time. Students may be paid by their own EMS service, but only at the employer’s discretion and under these conditions:

1. The student is not part of the legal, staffed crew.
2. The student follows the UW Health clinical dress code.
3. The student is precepted at all times during their shifts.

The UW Health EEC is not involved in any pay arrangements between a student and their service.

Before there was EMS as we know it, there was the Freedom House Ambulance in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The service was born in a predominantly Black neighborhood known as the Hill District in response to insufficient services related to medical emergencies. Nearly 60 years later, we owe a debt of gratitude to the people who persevered to create Freedom House Ambulance.

Visit our latest blog to learn how EMS has roots in Black history, and hear the story of Freedom House as told by the people who created it: https://www.cityofmadison.com/fire/blog/2026-02-13/freedom-house-ambulance-how-ems-has-roots-in-black-history
